Lindsay Smothers and her husband spent years researching treatment options for their daughter’s flat feet diagnosis. Misaligned, or flat feet, are common and affect people of all ages. Misalignment occurs when the ankle bone loses its stability and slips out of place.
Due to the pain in her feet since she was a toddler, 10-year-old Lola was an ideal candidate for the HyProCure procedure. She did not enjoy participating in much activity because of the pain she would experience in her feet and shins. Unable to wear specific types of shoes, she also had an abnormal gait pattern and lacked coordination.
“My husband and I work in physical therapy and we’re aware of the future impact on her body if the pronation wasn’t corrected. We knew that she would likely need knee, hip, and possibly back surgery at a very early age if the pain in her feet wasn’t addressed,” adds Smothers.
“In our research, Dr. Foster’s videos and website kept drawing us in. We called many other places closer to home without feeling at peace. When I called Dr. Foster’s office, I spoke with Carrie who was more than knowledgeable about HyProCure. She was so nice to speak with and gave me more information than I requested. We immediately felt at home, as if we were family.”
Lindsay traveled 12 hours from Alabama to meet Dr. Foster. She visited his office one time before choosing the HyProCure procedure for Lola.
HyProCure is the Proven Solution for Flat Feet
“The goal with the HyProCure procedure is to realign and stabilize the ankle bone. The foot is the foundation to the body and a misaligned, pronating hindfoot creates an unstable foundation. Over-pronation can lead to other foot problems, including heel pain/plantar fasciosis, bunions and hammertoes,” adds Joel Foster, DPM.
HyProCure is a small titanium stent that is inserted into the sinus tarsi fixing hyperpronation at its root by keeping the sinus tarsi in a stable open position. It is placed into a naturally-occurring space in between the ankle bone and heel bone through a small incision below the outer ankle bone. There are no pins, screws or drills required.
“HyProCure stabilizes the foot and restores natural joint motion. The patient is able to move their foot freely so it’s easy to perform day-to-day activities. Since the procedure is minimally-invasive, patients are typically back into their regular shoes within a few weeks, if not sooner,” adds Dr. Foster.
Lola’s Post-Op Plan of Care
After a short 45-minute procedure with Dr. Foster, Lola was discharged with a walking boot and crutches. Her pain was very minimal after surgery.
“She barely took any of the pain medication provided, and transitioned to Tylenol within 48 hours. Again, this was very surprising to us all,” adds Smothers.
Lola walked with the aid of crutches for the first 2-3 days, putting a little weight on the boot or as much weight as she could tolerate. She visited Dr. Foster three days post-surgery and was instructed to remain in the boot for two weeks, or until the two-week x-rays were received and approved to transition into a new, supportive tennis shoe. After transitioning into a tennis shoe she was instructed to simply walk for the next 4-5 weeks. At eight weeks Lola was able to resume normal activities.
“Everyone in the office made my daughter feel so comfortable. They were sure to check in on us regularly after surgery and were available for any concerns that we had. We have zero regrets, and we would do it all again.”
Lola’s Progress to Date
Lola has been progressing well, post-surgery. In addition to walking and jogging with her mother without complaints, she recently joined a club volleyball team. She has no limitations and is working on volleyball agility drills that are designed to increase her speed and mobility.
She was released mid-October on her second foot procedure with Dr. Foster, and tackled a week-long trip to New York City during Thanksgiving where she walked up to 10 miles each day.
“She did this without any complaints. This was a colossal accomplishment for her as she absolutely hated walking longer distances before HyProCure.”
“We are forever grateful to Dr. Foster and his entire staff, and we would return back for future needs without hesitation. We would absolutely recommend Dr. Foster to anyone. Our experience with Dr. Foster was so pleasant and we couldn’t be happier with our results,” adds Smothers.
