From a historic sawmill barn built in 1875 transformed into a brand-new, magical special events venue, Haymaker’s Mill 1875 is newly renovated and now hosting its first celebrations.
The venue’s owners are Allison and Mark Haymaker. Mark and his brother, John Haymaker, are the second generation of their family to own and operate the Haymaker Tree and Lawn business, a full-service tree company serving Stark and neighboring counties in Northeast Ohio for more than 50 years. Mark says the nostalgic barn on nearby property at 7192 Wales Ave. NW in North Canton beckoned to their love of preserving history and traditions, so the land was purchased and renovation of the barn began during February 2023.
“This one-of-a-kind wedding, milestone celebration and party venue combines rustic charm with modern elegance, making it an airy, spacious location that makes special events truly memorable,” assures Allison, who adds that they’ve dreamed of providing a welcoming public venue for quite a few years.
From weddings, bridal/baby showers, graduations, barbecue roasts and anniversary celebrations to corporate gatherings, seminars, training classes and holiday parties, Haymaker’s Mill 1875 offers a caterer’s kitchen, three bars and ample parking conveniently surrounding the venue to accommodate up to 240 attendees.
Doing most of the carpentry work themselves, Mark says they also dismantled two township barns to reuse their beams and sidings for 1875’s conversion.
“The barn was salvageable, but needed a lot of work. About 80% of the barn’s original wood is still there in use. But now it’s got a new roof, foundation, flooring, plumbing and additions to the front and back,” Mark says. “The electric and an HVAC system are new for the barn as well. Having heat and air-conditioning will give guests access to the barn all year-round.”
The Haymakers visited Italy during June 2023, a trip during which they state the country's famous Tuscany architecture inspired the stonework they then had added to the barn.
Gracing the venue’s main ceiling area is seven chandeliers, announces Allison. “We also have a lofted bridal suite with a private dressing and powder room, along with a separate groom’s room, to which we plan to add a golf simulator unit.”
She says rental packages include options for round or rectangular farm tables and chairs, plus dishes and flatware. She also can provide a preferred vendors’ list of local and regional businesses for resources such as florists, photographers, videographers, event decorators, wedding planners and musicians.
“One of the attributes that sets us apart from other venues is our landscaping and outdoor opportunities. We have a creek as a water feature and a large patio for outdoor ceremonies, including a large grotto area made of sandstone boulders. We’ve deliberately planned several spots to provide various types of photo ops,” Allison says.
Haymaker office manager Smith Doubet emphasizes that the venue is a designed property encircled by carefully curated bushes, shrubs and trees, for which selection was based on years of experience and knowledge of Haymaker-related landscaping initiatives. “Everything is the look of natural landscaping with a lot of stonework. The concrete walkway runs from the barn to the back, with the creek running alongside. There are also two waterfalls that feed into the creek,” Smith adds.
In the future, Mark says they plan to add a chapel, grape harbor room and outdoor fire pits. “We hope to also have food trucks and other outdoor resources, such as lighting, tents and acoustics,” he adds.
“From rustic to refined, our 1875 barn is set to become a haven for unforgettable celebrations,” promises Allison.
