Dr. Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Jill Jenkins met in their residency program at Children's Mercy and found their shared passion for caring for children and helping them feel comfortable at the dentist. In July 2005, they opened a private practice dedicated to children from infancy to age 18 and patients with special needs.
"Pediatric dentistry involves an acute understanding of developmental psychology, an educational piece that allows for greater awareness and empathy toward how children process and respond." —Jenkins + LeBlanc
As many children develop fears of going to the dentist at an early age, Jenkins + LeBlanc puts an emphasis on each child's first visit and making it a positive experience.
"We have found that positive reinforcement and encouragement go a long way with children, so around our office, you will find games, movies, toy machines, and balloons; all rewards for our patients' efforts during their appointment."
With a team of eight board-certified pediatric dentists, multiple registered dental hygienists and skilled dental assistants, Jenkins + LeBlanc has an office in Kansas City, Olathe, Overland Park, Prairie Village and Shawnee.
Dr. LeBlanc was even named an AAPD Fellow by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a high honor that has significant requirements to meet in the areas of leadership, scholarship activity and community involvement.
"From volunteering at The Ronald McDonald house to donating toothbrushes and toothpaste to those in need, we want to give back as much as we possibly can. Our doctors have been on several dental mission trips and volunteer their time and services to children who don't have access to dental care. We are always looking for ways to give back and support our community."
Dr. Jenkins and Dr. LeBlanc also continue to do work at Children's Mercy and provide specialized dental care for kids who have a variety of needs. Each team member at Jenkins + LeBlanc truly has a unique heart for children that helps each child feel at ease when in their care.
3 Dental Hygiene Tips for Parents + Kids
"When it comes to dental disease or decay, we believes prevention is key. As parents, there are so many factors that out of our control, so we like to focus on the things we can control."
1. Make sure your child is brushing two times daily with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing once daily.
2. Try to avoid foods and drinks more likely to cause cavities. This includes anything sweet, sticky, or chewy as well as soda pops, juices, or sports energy drinks.
3. Steer toward healthier options such as fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, nuts and water.
Having a dental home is also imperative to good dental hygiene. When a child—and mom and dad—can feel comfortable with their dentist and even enjoy the environment, it's easier on everyone to maintain a consistent schedule and seeing the dentist every six months is vital to keeping your smile healthy.
