Mariam Akanan, LLMSW

Joining our team of therapy providers - Currently seeing clients virtually

I am a first-generation Arab immigrant, social worker, community organizer, advocate & meditation enthusiast. My interest in social work, mental health, & community healing stem from my personal experience living through geopolitical tensions and conflicts, navigating global systems, experiencing existential & cultural challenges, adjusting to major life changes, & simply trying to fit in this world. I have a special interest in working with youth & young adults, the Arab community, immigrants, refugees, BIPOC & LGBTQI+ people.

I work with individuals to explore complex questions while providing a space that honors the diverse narratives we hold. I practice cultural humility & mindfulness of the sociopolitical systems, using an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed & human-centric approach in treatment, bringing power & positionality analysis to my practice.

I believe and respect that everyone's experiences are their own, which only assists me as a therapist with meeting you where you are at. My goal is to provide a respectful and non-judgmental space for you to develop your own unique way to process through emotions and experiences, to achieve your own sense of emotional well-being.

In my career as Clinical Social Worker, I’ve worked with adults with chronic or acute mental illness through positive solution focus therapeutic approaches.

I practice strength-based approach's to support clients with setting personal goals with an open mind, active listening and respect. I believe and approach every therapeutic process different to fit the needs of the client.
