Microneedling treatments are increasing in popularity among people of all ages due to their ability to stimulate collagen and improve skin tone and texture. Over the past few years, microneedling technology has evolved now offering patients a variety of microneedling options allowing for flexibility of a specific skin type, concern, and desired downtime.

The Original Microneedling, the ‘Pen’

The original or traditional microneedling treatment is often referred to as a Microneedling ‘Pen’. While there are a number of pen brands on the market, the device sought after by many dermatologists and medical spa doctors is the SkinPen® by Bellus Medical. The SkinPen is highly rated for its efficacy and safety. SkinPen works by creating a series of hundreds of microscopic channels into the dermis to stimulate the skin’s natural production of new collagen and elastin, helping skin to look and feel healthier. SkinPen can be used on the face and body. On average, patients can expect a series of three treatments and some redness and flaking of the skin for two to three days post-treatment. SkinPen improves fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation (sun damage, age spots, freckles), stretch marks, skin texture, and elasticity.

Microneedling with Radio Frequency

The newest microneedling treatment to hit the aesthetic market is Microneedling with Radio Frequency (RF). By combining microneedling with RF, these powerful devices offer an even more significant boost to collagen production. The microneedles deliver fractional RF energy into varying levels of the skin including the deeper layers where treatment is most beneficial. Unlike traditional microneedling, which only deposits energy on the surface of the skin, microneedling with RF delivers energy below the surface where it’s needed most to help revitalize and regenerate the tissue. This unique delivery of energy delivers optimal results with minimal disruption to the skin’s surface, resulting in less downtime than traditional microneedling.

Secret® RF by Cutera is a Microneedling with Radio Frequency device that delivers RF energy beneath the skin surface to the epidermis and dermis improving wrinkles, scarring, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and skin texture and elasticity. Patients can expect little to no downtime following a Secret RF treatment. Like traditional microneedling, best results are achieved with a series of three treatments, however, patients typically see significant improvement after one treatment.

Morpheus8 by InMode is a powerful Microneedling with Radio Frequency treatment allowing for even more versatility of treatment depth and can be better customized to the patient’s specific needs. Morpheus8 offers a powerful collagen stimulation while also having the ability to coagulate fat and tighten tissue making it excellent for both face and body. Morpheus8 is used to improve wrinkles, facial sagging, undereye bags, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, skin texture, body fat, and body skin tightening. Patients getting a Morpheus8 treatment should expect a few days of redness following treatment. Like other devices, best results are achieved with a series of three treatments, however, patients typically see significant improvement after one treatment.

Microneedling with PRP

Combining a microneedling treatment with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) can further enhance results and accelerate healing. PRP involves the use of a patient’s own blood plasma, enriched through a special process to increase the concentration of platelets. These platelets contain bioactive proteins and growth factors that serve to accelerate tissue repair and regeneration while also activating your own anti-aging stem cells. This concentrated serum is applied to the skin in combination with both traditional Microneedling and Microneedling with RF.

Choosing a Microneedling Provider
