Imagine this: It’s the middle of the winter, and your heater is on the fritz. Or perhaps worse — it’s the middle of another blistering hot summer, and your AC is blowing hot air and making weird noises. Clearly, this is a job for an experienced HVAC contractor. And the good news is that plenty of options are not too far from home.

But then it hits you — How do I choose the right HVAC contractor?

After all, just because you have plenty of options doesn’t mean you can’t go wrong. For every quality heating or AC repair guy out there, three more give the industry a bad name — thus making it increasingly more complex to know if you’ve made the right choice.

Thankfully, the good folks at ENERGY STAR compiled a list of 10 tips homeowners must follow to ensure they hire the right HVAC contractor. You can read their full article here. But in the meantime, here are a few of the top tips on their list:

Tips for Hiring the Right HVAC Contractor

 1. Know which licensing requirements they must follow and only work with the ones who can provide proof. Also, study your system, including its model number and maintenance history, and be ready to describe the heating or cooling issues you’re experiencing.

2. Don’t hesitate to ask friends, neighbors, and co-workers for referrals. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.

3. Take the referral tip a step further and ask your chosen HVAC contractor to provide references for you to call. You’ll want to know how they performed, if they’re reasonably priced, and if the job was completed on time.

4. Beyond researching the HVAC contractors themselves, check to see if any rebates exist for energy-efficient ENERGY STAR-qualified heating and cooling equipment. This is especially true if you’re having to buy a new system.

5. The HVAC contractor you choose should be able to show you how much money you can save on energy with new equipment.

6. The right HVAC contractor will take the time to inspect your current system to find the root cause of your heating and cooling issues. This can include inspecting airflow in each room, checking your duct system for leaks, etc.

7. Only work with an HVAC contractor who provides written, itemized estimates.

In addition to these tips above, ask yourself these questions before choosing an HVAC contractor:

 •  Did they sound knowledgeable when I spoke to them?

•  Are they local, and how long have they been in business?

•  Are they a family-owned company (like A&A Air is) or corporate?

•  Did they provide options?

•  What was their response time?

•  Do they do it all (heating, AC, air quality, etc.)?

•  Do they warranty their repairs and installations?

•  What brands do they carry?

•  Do they offer service contracts?

•  Do they offer priority scheduling?
