"I'll keep that...just in case!"
Does this sound familiar? As the first full month of 2021 comes to an end, we can't put off the somewhat dreaded task of decluttering our home. Enter "purging." Unlike organizing, where we place things in a nice and neat way, purging involves removing items we don't really use, need or desire anymore.
Fear not for those of you who have put this task on the back burner! I have collaborated with local Houston business owner Rachel of A Beautiful Mess, a professional organizing company, to bring you her very own 5 step system on "how to purge any space."
1. Start Small
• Take the hall closet, one junk drawer, or your desk area.
• We’ll start with a small space so you can get the hang of this system.
2. Create a System - Keep, Donate & Discard
• Keep - set aside the things you know you need or want to keep in their own pile.
• Donate - have a box or a bag you can take immediately to your local donation place - the same day, if possible.
• Discard - recycle or trash anything you don’t need immediately.
3. Look at the Items to Keep
• What do you already have at home to organize these items? Use extra bins, baskets, or boxes that are in good condition and make sense for your space.
• What do you need to purchase to help organize them? • What is your budget for your organization bins?
4. Simplify & Make Sense of the Space
• Group like items together.
• Move items that do not go in the current space immediately to the “new” home.
5. Rules to Keep Organized after Purging
• Put items back in their homes quickly.
• If there’s not a home, then rethink the idea of keeping. Is it really necessary?
• When shopping, think ahead to where this item might live.
Thank you, Rachel, for providing these amazing easy-to-follow steps! Will you be entering 2021 with a refreshed and renewed space in your home? Share with friends and family and let me and A Beautiful Mess know how you get on!
