Nontraditional Egg Rolls

BUFFALO CHICKEN EGG ROLLS AND BBQ + BACON CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS

Whether traditional or a rendition, egg rolls are a delicious and easy appetizer to serve while entertaining, whether it be a casual get together with a few friends or part of a cocktail hour for a more formal gathering. Not only do they taste amazing, but they are the perfect finger food; easy to eat and mess free. With just a little creativity, you can fit this appetizer into your meals no matter what type of cuisine you are serving. I enjoy making different versions of egg rolls because I am able to fill those crispy wrappers, the best part of the dish in my opinion, with various types of foods giving them such different flavors.

There are many restaurants that serve nontraditional egg rolls and spring rolls. On the plate they may look alike but once you take that first bite, you can’t help but be intrigued by their unique flavors. There are many different directions you can take when filling egg roll wrappers. Two favorites that I have created are my Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls and my BBQ & Bacon Cheeseburger Egg Rolls. Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time for filling: 20 minutes

Cook time for deep frying: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cups of shredded cooked chicken
  • 8oz package of cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup mild hot sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • egg roll wrappers 
  • vegetable oil (for deep frying) 

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the chicken, cream cheese, shredded cheese 

and hot sauce.

3. Transfer mixture into an oven safe pan and cook for 20 minutes. The 

cream cheese and shredded cheese should be melted.

4. Remove from the oven and place two tbsp of filling into each egg roll 

wrapper.

5. Fold wrapper and seal edges with water.

6. Deep fry each egg roll for one minute on either side until crispy and enjoy!

BBQ + Bacon Cheeseburger Egg Rolls

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time for filling: 10 minutes

Cook time for deep frying: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbsp barbeque sauce
  • 1/2 red onion chopped 
  • 3 strips of bacon
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • egg roll wrappers
  • vegetable oil (for deep frying)
  • dash of salt 
  • dash of pepper

Directions:

1. Heat saucepan to medium & coat with oil

2. Add ground beef to pan, season with salt & pepper and cook until 

brown.

3. In a separate pan, sauté chopped onion with oil until translucent.

4. Cook the bacon until crispy, blot off the excess oil and chop finely.

5. Combine the ground beef, onions, bacon and barbeque sauce and mix 

well.

6. Place two tbsp of filling into each egg roll wrapper and top with shredded

cheese.

7. Fold the egg roll wrapper and seal edges with water.

8. Deep fry each egg roll for one minute on either side until crispy and enjoy!
