What is the Pilates Reformer and why is it so popular?

By far the most popular piece of Pilates equipment is the reformer. The reformer has a bed-like platform referred to as the carriage which slides back and forth on wheels. The carriage is attached with a set of colored springs which create different levels of resistance. Clients pull with arms or legs in a set of straps to glide the carriage which creates a flow and rhythm unique to any other form of exercise. Fluid movement makes it enjoyable.

Is the Reformer for me?

The reformer is an extremely versatile piece of equipment, springs can be changed based on client’s body size and/or skill level. By changing the springs an advanced client can be challenged while a beginning client with physical limitations can be supported. Often when lighter springs are used some exercises can challenge balance and core, but at other times heavier springs can be used and provide more resistance which increases muscle strength. The instructor will guide the client on the appropriate spring(s) that suit his/her individual needs. Thus, providing multiple options in a class setting.

What are the Benefits of the Reformer?

  • Flexibility

"Lengthens as it strengthens" is a favorite Pilates motto. Cherished among dancers and gymnasts who need strong, flexible bodies The Reformer will support, lengthen and stretch the body, working deep into the muscles.

  • Strength

Springs provide resistance as you move which results in strengthened and toned muscles. We lose strength as we age, so resistance training is necessary for all. If one has osteopenia or osteoporosis, it’s vitally important to add resistance exercise to a daily routine. Pilates reformer work is a great alternative for those who don’t prefer the gym environment or it can be an additional complement to heavier weighted workouts.

  • Balance and Stability

The instability of the rolling carriage creates a stability challenge. Anytime one attempts to stabilize their body, core strength is developed and balance is improved. Two necessary skills needed for a healthy body.

  • Improved Posture

A strong core is necessary to realign the body. A weak core often results in shoulders rounding forward and/or the lower back slumping. Those in turn strain the back creating discomfort or even pain. The Reformer places you in a position with correct body alignment, which is the foundation for good posture.

  • Corrects muscle imbalances

Is one side of your body tighter than the other? While very common, significant differences in strength or flexibility or “asymmetry” can result in muscle discomfort. The Reformer works opposing muscle groups and strengthens all sides of the body. Pilates is a total body workout, meaning both the part(s) of the body moving and not moving are engaged.

  • Mindful Movement

The secret to a relaxed body is breathing. Connecting breath with movement creates purpose and mindfulness. Instructor cues when to inhale and when to exhale. Not only do you move on the Reformer, but you also move fluidly. Fluidness of motion is what makes Pilates enjoyable and beneficial at the same time.

I have Difficulty with the mat routine. Can I Use the Reformer?

Absolutely! Joseph Pilates started with mat exercises, and when he noticed struggles, he developed equipment to aid and support. The straps and springs assist the body to perform the exercises correctly. Furthermore, the Reformer helps people leverage their bodies into deeper form that they can take with them to the mat.

How Should I feel after a Reformer session?

Longer, lighter, lengthened, more relaxed. You should feel nothing short of great after finishing a session. Not uncommon for a client to say they even feel taller.
