Saturday afternoon rolls around (that's basically dinner time when you are a parent to a 5-month-old) and your husband asks, what should we do for dinner? You want to get something healthy, but it's also the weekend and he wants a treat. Oink and Moo BBQ in Somerville is actually the perfect compromise!
Let's talk about their menu for a second. It's BBQ, it's Tex-Mex (BBQ tacos), and there's even a little Asian flair with their bao buns. Heck! I would even say there is a little Italian influence with their pulled pork arancini balls. It's definitely a fusion restaurant! When it comes to the lighter side I was talking about above, they offer quinoa bowls which can come with some BBQ meats on top or you can opt for a vegan option. They definitely have a little something for everyone.
For dinner, Tom went with the smoked brisket sandwich (smoked brisket, Oink and Moo BBQ sauce, signature slaw, brioche bun). You also get an option for sweet potato fries or curly fries. Tom picked curly fries which were seasoned so well. As far as the sandwich goes it was really good. The brisket was smokey and super tender. The cool slaw complimented the tangy BBQ sauce perfectly. This massive sandwich costs $10.
I ordered the vegan quinoa bowl (sautéed Rainbow Quinoa, black bean salad, Oink and Moo BBQ sauce, pickled veggies). This was super flavorful and very light while being a filling meal. The black bean salad features corn, cherry tomatoes, and scallions. The black beans add protein and the tomatoes add a nice sweetness. Unfortunately, mine did not have the BBQ sauce on top, but I don't think it really needed it. My favorite part was the tangy pickled veggies which acted almost like a salad dressing. I love how colorful this dish was. It makes me feel like I'm being really healthy. This was a large portion and I added some tuna to my leftovers the next day for lunch. A lot of bang for your buck since it's only $8.
I also ordered a side of their Brussel sprouts to add more veggies to my meal. It wasn't super healthy being fried, but fried food always tastes amazing.
The final verdict, this is a place where the whole family can find something yummy to eat. We definitely recommend supporting them one weekend when everyone wants something a little bit different.
