Fitness is a big deal in Oklahoma City. This city has more fitness centers than some twice its size. OKC is the capital of Oklahoma City, commonly known for its cowboy heritage. The city, which unfortunately is prone to tornadoes and other natural disasters, is encircled by functioning oil wells. It's understandable why they need the gyms. Just having to stress about if or when the next storm is coming can take a toll on anyone. 

Regardless, of the many situations faced by OKC, it's a fun city with friendly people and more than 200 gyms of all varieties, to meet the demands of fitness enthusiasts and beginners in the city and its environs. The fitness centers have gone all out to provide the customers with state-of-the-art equipment, professional trainers, and a host of amenities. If you live in the area or you're visiting, read this guide to gyms in Oklahoma City, OK, to help you make a more informed decision.  

OKC Area Gyms

There is not much for 24-hour gyms, but you have your pick of everything else when it comes to gyms in OKC. There's climbing, Crossfit, powerlifting, MMA, boxing, gymnastics, and so much more. 

Northwest Expressway Gyms

Even though Oklahoma City is packed with gyms, only four are actually along the Northwest Expressway. They are all positioned between Lake Hefner and Wiley Post Airport-Pwa. Except for one, the gyms have very high ratings. The 10Gym, which is very popular in the state, offers group fitness, Zumba and yoga classes, childcare services, and one free guest every time you visit.

If you're seeking indoor or outdoor gyms, checking out membership options or want to join an open gym, all the options are available to you at this small cluster of gyms. 

Downtown Gyms

For people working amid the hustle and bustle of downtown OKC, it's essential to have a gym close by to rejuvenate. Twenty-eight gyms offer an array of workout routines from Wheeler District south of the city to Kilpatrick Turnpike, the most northerly point of OKC.

You can find other fitness centers that allow you to pay as you go or fitness with a kickboxing theme. Crossfit, martial arts, yoga and so much more. There's also networking at many of the gyms, flexibility and toning, strength exercise, and cardio that you get at. 

Between Myriad Botanical Gardens and Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum lies seven gyms. Depending on the hours you work, there's also a 24/7 gym for your convenience. But if you're looking for regular fitness routines, an athletics center with showers gives boxing, basketball, a wide array of exercise equipment, and after-school programs. 

Climbing Gyms in OKC

There are only five climbing gyms in Oklahoma City and its suburbs. Two of them are outside the city. For whatever reason, climbing seems to be the least popular fitness activity in OKC. Then again, climbing is still emerging, so the trend may change shortly. Summit Climbing Yoga & Fitness and University Health Club are the closest climbing gyms to Midtown, OKC. They are both rock climbing and bouldering gyms. People keen on competitive climbing are inclined to workout at those clubs.

Boxing Gyms in OKC

There are quite a few boxing gyms in OKC with a few right on the edge of the business district. Crossfit 405 is in the heart of Midtown and has high ratings. They focus on strength and nutrition. Only one boxing gym has a low rating so make sure to check before you sign up for membership.

24-Hour Gyms

Only 10 of the more than 200 gyms in OKC extend themselves 24/7. However, the few 24-hour gyms are all rated 4.3 or higher, except one with a 3.7-star rating. There are a few in the city with one in Midtown near Automobile Alley. 

Crossfit Gyms

There are 25 Crossfit gyms strewn across Oklahoma City. The gyms are strategically located wherein every highway you exit into the city, you're likely to come upon a Crossfit gym. North to south, you'll find Crossfit gyms with intense strengthening and toning exercise programs.

Basketball Gyms in OKC

Basketball is a popular exercise in OKC. It would be surprising if it weren’t since the city has a top-tier NBA basketball team, OKC Thunder. You can score some three pointers or maybe do a few slam-dunks at any of 46 basketball gyms in OKC. Lighthouse Sports, Fitness & Health has a great basketball program. The 100,000-square-foot fitness center features dance classes, Pilates, T’AI CHI, water sessions and water baby classes as well.

MMA Gyms

A total of 28 gyms in OKC offer mixed martial arts (MMA) training, which suggests that the sport or fighting strategy is getting popular there. Please note that, a large number of the gyms are in proximity and not actually inside OKC, but are a short ride away. However, inside OKC, you must go to Western Avenue Boxing Gym close to midtown for a gym with competent trainers.

If you're in the vicinity of Lake Hefner, three MMA gyms are surrounding it. In any section of town you live, work, or visit, there should be no trouble locating a dependable MMA gym near you. 

American Ninja Warrior Gyms

There is only one American Ninja Warriors fitness center in or around OKC. Fortunately, it comes with well-equipped facilities with experienced trainers. Family Fitness 24/7 is just north of John Kilpatrick Turnpike but according to the gyms members, it is worth the hike. 

The club’s fitness program’s main priority is weight training, which encompasses boxing, martial arts, core muscle training, balance, and ninja obstacles.

Powerlifting Gyms in OKC

You will find only eight powerlifting gyms in OKC. Bodybuilding and upper body strengthening doesn't seem to be a big deal for gym enthusiasts in this city and the state as a whole. OKC Barbell Club is the only one within the city limits and is just north of Central Oklahoma City. 

Gyms With Pools

There are 66 gyms in OKC with pools. If you're in the region South Oklahoma City 10 Gym has a great facility and many positive reviews. You can cool off safely there. There's one gym in The Midtown area but all the others are on the outskirts of town. Just a quick note that some pools, may not have a stellar rating, therefore the onus is on you to check the reviews and double check whichever facility you eventually choose. 

Gyms with Childcare

There are 63 gyms in OKC that are kid-friendly. Therefore, if you need to get some training done and you're worried about childcare, you have a multiplicity of options. For women who want to try out some acrobatic moves or just learn some slinky floor moves Aerial Arts of OKC has a very talented coaching team and they offer childcare. You can visit them for private classes, studio rental, for competition exercise, dance and yoga. The focus at Aerial Gym is for women to be positive about their bodies.

Many people enjoy getting slinging kettlebells to help improve their strength and flexibility. 30 gyms with kettlebells are in the OKC area that will accommodate you. 

Quick Tip: Don’t ever let gym membership costs be a deterrent to you getting some professional fitness training. Prices and fees aren't set in stone, so, consider asking for a fee waiver or a smaller monthly fee. Many gyms have flexible payment plans and discount options. Ask, and you'll be surprised.  

OKC is a lovely city, and so are most of the gyms. If you're midtown, south of the city or on the outskirts, you can find a gym nearby to begin improving your well-being.
