The start of the new year and onslaught of fitness goals can be intimidating, alienating, and even discouraging at times. Our televisions and newsfeeds are overrun by traditionally "perfect" bodies demonstrating high-intensity and high-impact workouts designed to "shock, burn, and destroy" your system. With all of that on display, it can be overwhelming to a beginner or someone wanting to start a fitness routine.

I've encouraged my clients to adopt the mindset that exercise is not a punishment, but a celebration of all that their capable body can do.

Every single time you move your body in an intentional way, that is a victory. The choice to love the space that you occupy and take positive steps forward towards your goal should become your true goal. Realizing that any motion is indeed motion forward is a powerful feeling; it can release you from the pressure of starting and allow you the freedom to continue. All progress is good progress.

A very common trap I see people fall into is thinking that fitness is an "all or nothing" process. That couldn't be further from the truth. Fitness is for everybody and every body. There are over seven billion people on this Earth and not one single person moves like anybody else. All journeys are unique. Stop comparing yourself and revel in your own path, at whatever pace and intensity you choose to go about it. Take one step at a time and enjoy each and every one of those steps.

Here are some positive mantras to inspire your next workout, no matter what level you start at:

1. Every great athlete once started as a beginner

Think of an athlete that you admire. At one point they walked into their first training session, played their first game, made their first throw, etc. Everyone has a day one. This workout could be the beginning of your big break.

2. Someone is looking up to you

Regardless of how you feel about yourself, there is always someone watching from the sidelines wishing they could do the things you do. Keep going, you never know who you are inspiring in the process.

3. The only person you have to impress is yourself

Don't forget that you are the only person that you are accountable to. Make yourself proud. Hold yourself to a higher standard.

4. Exercising should be fun

You might be rolling your eyes at this one, but if you don't have a workout routine that inspires you, you don't have a workout routine that will change your life. If you feel stuck in a rut, try something new! There are so many options now, like classes at boutique fitness studios or free online workouts you can do from the comfort of your home. Grab a buddy and try something new.

5. Every day is a fresh start

At the end of the day, remember: you have a new one coming. Dust yourself off and start again with an open mind tomorrow.

The next time you lace up your sneakers, take a few deep breaths and try one of these positive thoughts. Lead yourself through your workout with intention and a smile. Remember, you are strong, capable, and worthy!
