5 Common Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight

Aurea Med Spa Registered Dietitian Tabbetha Lopez shares five reasons that might be preventing you from meeting your weight loss goals

As we know, weight loss is a process. The numbers on the scale might not be dipping as fast as you'd like, but several things may be influencing your weight loss that are worth considering. Aurea Med Spa's registered dietitian Tabbetha Lopez, Ph.D., R.D., L.D. helps her clients manage their weight through proper nutrition, exercise, and motivation.

"As a Ph.D., my research focuses on eating behaviors. I use this knowledge to help my clients achieve their goals," says Lopez. "For most of my clients, this includes small behavioral changes around diet and exercise. I always advise people to reach out for coaching support early. At Aurea, we are here to support you through your journey."

Lopez shares five common problems people encounter while they are trying to lose weight, along with simple solutions to help fix them.

Skipping meals

Often, people on a weight loss journey will skip meals to save their calories for later or not take the time to eat a meal. However, this sets them up for failure because a few hours later, they are starving and will often overeat. It is best to eat meals throughout the day to ensure adequate nutrition and cut down on overeating.

Weight loss is not all or nothing

We develop many food rules associated with weight loss. These rules usually stem from fad or short-term diets. Unfortunately, these rules set us up for failure. So cut yourself a little slack and remember, it's all about balance.

Too many high-intensity workouts

Many of us spend too much time doing high-intensity exercises instead of mixing them up with moderate-intensity activities. As a result, we are not allowing our bodies to utilize fat as energy. Try varying up the intensity of your workouts to see more long-term benefits.

Cutting calories too low

When our bodies are in a severe calorie deficit, the body goes into starvation mode, also known as storage mode. Our metabolism slows down, and our bodies store any extra energy. For successful weight loss, we need to maintain only a slight calorie deficit.

Nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)

NEAT is a meaningful phrase for movement, fidgeting, pacing, posture, eating, typing, etc. We often forget the value of an activity, but research shows that individuals with higher NEAT levels tend to be leaner and maintain lower body weight. Every movement counts, so start moving.
