Two Boys, One Family – November 2022
This story is so special to us. Our magazine has always been a way for our us to learn about our community and to try to bring neighbors closer together - this was as true after COVID as it is today. The series of fortuitous events that led to this story coming together just demonstrates how much a story can sometimes fight for our attention. Let’s address some of the unease that this story may have caused, we are not members of the church and do not wish to promote one world view over another. To us, this was a story of parents who see their children heading out for the first time into the world and the courage it takes to make this sacrifice. The Willams' story is no different than a lot of families who see their young adult leave for college or see them pursue opportunities in a distant city. Well…as you may have noticed, this one has a twist. You will be glad to know that Jesse and Josh are now back home and we will be talking to them for our November issue.
Community is a Mission – November 2019
Talk about a lucky break for us newbie publishers! We snagged our first celebrity cover with none other than Andy Stanley, the mega-church pastor and bestselling author. On a sunny September day, he graciously shared his time and wisdom with us at Mission Church in Gilbert. Who knew our little dream to connect our community could lead to such a powerful moment?
Andy painted a picture of churches as vibrant community hubs, not just Sunday hangouts. Think dance recitals and club meetings - a real "seven days a week" kinda place. Little did we know how precious this vision would become when the pandemic hit soon after. Sometimes, the smallest opportunities lead to the biggest blessings!
Horse Sense – April 2020
We were over the moon with excitement to share a story about our favorite 4-legged celebrities - the Salt River wild horses. These majestic creatures have stolen hearts all over Gilbert!
We had a blast chatting with the rescue foundation superheroes who play "horse detective," keeping tabs on the herd's health from afar. And get this - we uncovered a secret society of wildlife photographers who've mastered the art of horse paparazzi! They snap stunning shots while giving these wild beauties their space.
It's quite a balancing act - helping without helicopter parenting these free spirits. Hats off to these amazing folks for letting us all enjoy a slice of wild horse heaven!
One Step Forward with Chris Powell _ February 2023
From fitness guru to suddenly vanishing from the spotlight, Chris Powell's story took an unexpected turn - one we felt compelled to share. In a heartfelt chat, Chris opened up about his rollercoaster ride from top of the world to struggling to face each day.
But don't worry, this tale has a silver lining! Chris found his way back to the light, discovering a new calling in helping others. Our morning with him was a mix of teary moments and belly laughs - proof that even the toughest challenges can lead to beautiful new beginnings.
We're truly honored Chris trusted us with his journey. It's a reminder that even heroes have their battles - and comebacks.
Ladies of the East Valley - May 2021
In the wake of Covid's isolation, our first in-person gathering was a breath of fresh air. Amid the laughter and joy of reuniting, While there were so many women that at this event that I am lucky enough to call my friends, I met one truly awe inspiring individual: Kelly Geisler. Kelly's impact on our community is immeasurable, her dedication shining like a beacon of hope. With seemingly effortless grace, she tackles monumental challenges—from teen homelessness to supporting lonely seniors, providing heat relief, and nourishing our veterans. Her tireless efforts inspire us all, reminding us of the power of compassion and community spirit. Kelly, you are a true light in our lives, and your selfless contributions make our world brighter every day. Thank you for being an incredible friend and community hero.
Stirling Synchronicity- February 2021
We had known about Lindsey Stirling for a while having come across one of her earlier videos on YouTube – Zelda was always one of our favorite games of all time. When we found out that she actually grew up in Gilbert we knew we had to reach out to her team to see if we there was a way to tell her story. We are so grateful to her and the team to share some thoughts and amazing pictures from one of her performances. It really shows her passion and the love she has for her craft and her home town.
When All you can think about is Fashion – September 2022
Aleisha Yanagawa is a force of nature. We could tell from our first meeting that there was definitely a story there – the stylish Italian running shoes helped a lot. She was in the middle of opening her own store, dealing with all the complexity of being a single mom with two teenage daughters and navigating the intricacy of interior design, contractors, and city inspectors. Even then, we knew it was not going to stop her. The photos from the shoot were simply amazing and picking the cover was easy – a new take on “The Thinker” by Aleisha Yanagawa.
Meet the Man behind Benny Blanco Tortillas- December 2023
Oh boy, did we stumble upon a tasty treasure this year! Benny Blanco Tortillas, run by the one and only Christopher Hudson (aka the "Big Bald Guy"), is THE hottest thing at Gilbert Farmers Market. This tortilla wizard took grandma's recipes and sprinkled in some magic to create pure deliciousness. From fancy wheat to gluten-free, he's got a tortilla for every tummy. And get this - he even gives free tortillas to folks who need 'em. Talk about a big heart to match those big flavors! These tortillas are so good, they should come with a warning label!
Biker Girl- August 2021
We were so thrilled to see family events filled with dirt, adrenaline, and the sweetest little speedsters you've ever seen? Luckily our team was introduced to the thrilling world of BMX racing through the eyes of pint-sized powerhouse Evie Currie. This 4-year-old firecracker is redefining what it means to be a "biker chick," leaving boys in her dust and collecting trophies to fill her whole house.
But it's not just about the races – it's the heartwarming community of families cheering each other on, sharing equipment, and bonding over Ring Pops and snack stands. The Chandler Racetrack was where we witnessed the pure joy of the teeniest kids like Evie tearing up the track every Monday and Friday. As we watch these tiny titans conquer jumps and turns, it simply reminds us that we all can live in that moment of no fear and because of family and friends are there to cheer us on.
Gilbert Super Dads – June 2021
It’s always the story behind the story that really gets us. What started out as a simple project to honor dads in our community turned into so much more. This was our first attempt in a true community involved story as we had asked for our readers to submit nominations as why their fathers, husbands, fur baby dads, grandfathers, and bonus dads should be called Super Dads. We had so many, many nominations that I wish I could have had more pages. Ozzy Lewis wife and kids sent in the sweetest nomination that we had to choose them for our cover dad. The fun part was we had placed a few copies at a local shop so that we could surprise Ozzy with the cover. Words can not express the honest emotions that just flowed out of him when he realized. Hey that’s me on the cover.
Follow the White Rabbit – October 2020
This article was a challenge. Not for the writing, mind you, that came very easily. It was late summer of 2020, the first wave of COVID was finally tapering out and this was my first time out at a public venue, sharing a space with a lot of strangers. Just sitting at the bar made me tense. Luckily, the staff at the White Rabbit are magicians and discussing cocktails with Fernando made me forget about all the stress we had endured and reminded me how fun it was to just hang out. I’ve always been a cocktail aficionado, but I was impressed by the high level of knowledge and skills displayed by the wait staff. Fernando blew my mind with his take on a variation of the Sazerac – The Shadow Train. My very Mad Hatters hat off to Fernando and Megan for the amazing memories and the wonderful cocktails!
Rock It Man- December 2022-
Holy drumsticks, Gilbert! Our very own Recker Eans rocketed from local wonder to national sensation faster than you can say "ba-dum-tss"! This pint-sized percussion prodigy became the face of Peacock TV's "The Kids Tonight Show," rubbing elbows with Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels. By day, he was navigating sixth grade; by night, he was lighting up 30 Rock! When he was not cracking jokes on-air, Recker's was thrashing at School of Rock proving he's got more rhythm in his pinky than most of us have in our whole bodies. Watch out, world – Gilbert might just have the next Lar Ulrich living among us.
Roaring Tigers – August 2022 -
August was such a fun issue! Summer memories with Nadine and her boys, meeting Micheal, Emma, and Tubba Bear, breakaway roping with Olivia, Gabriella, and Tory at the rodeo. This issue was full of fun and amazing adventures. None captured more the energy of that issue more than the Roaring Tigers! The boys competed in the Gridiron Flag Football league and had just won their first championship ring. You can tell by the energy captured in the cover that this team was unstoppable! Shortly after the issue dropped, we headed out to the practice field on a warm August evening with a box of magazines. The smiles on their faces and the pride of making the cover made our hearts melt. What an amazing shot! Alli Lewis, the photographer credited with the shot is one of the team moms and a teacher – photography is just something she does for fun.
Pawsitively Perfect – August 2024
Fair warning: extreme adorableness ahead!
We were looking for a fresh take on pet portraits and boy did Hannah Carl deliver. She is truly a photographer with a soft spot for furry faces. This former shelter volunteer turned pro knows how to catch your pet's true personality – whether they're a natural-born model or more of a camera-shy cutie.
Hannah's secret sauce? A mix of patience, creativity, and yes, the occasional "pupsicle" prop. (Trust us, it works!) Her photos pop with color and playfulness, capturing those slice-of-life moments that'll have you grinning from ear to ear.
From goofy grins to soulful stares, Hannah's lens tells a pet's unique story.
Someone to Call – November 2022
Picture this: savvy teens manning the phones and responding to texts, offering a lifeline to their fellow teens in crisis. It's peer support at its finest. What really impressed me is how they connected with so many kids willing to volunteer -- high school football players, even; we know they are busy! It's like they've cracked the code on making mental health support "hip." (Is that still a word? Oh, who cares!) In all seriousness, though, this program is bridging a crucial gap. It's heartening to see young people taking charge of their mental health narrative. If this is the future, count me as a hopeful optimist!
Touchdown for Charity – June 2024
Let me tell you about the heartwarming story we discovered this year for our men’s issue! Remember Mark McMillian, that speedy NFL player they called "Mighty Mouse"? Well, he's traded his football for a spatula, and he's grilling up a storm of kindness!
Mark and his wife Adreanne have fallen head over heels for Ryan House, Arizona's only children's hospice. They're not just writing checks - Mark's teamed up with Chef Russell from Hotel Valley Ho to cook for the kids and throw the most amazing fundraisers.
Mark's using his fame to bring joy and comfort to these brave kids. Talk about a touchdown for kindness! We are so lucky he has decided to call Gilbert home.
