"A candle is like a supportive friend in the corner who doesn’t need to speak, but you know is there. There’s no concrete explanation as to why candles are so comforting; it’s just a feeling they evoke." –Lauren Martin

Before Jamcat Candles

Growing up with wonderful role models instilled a strong work ethic in Janet Abdenour Dabney, owner of Jamcat Candles. She understood there is desire in striving to reach her goals and aspirations. Listening to her intrinsic nature of wanting to help people, Janet knew at a young age that she wanted to become a nurse.

After years of caring for ill children as a pediatric registered nurse and then supporting patients as a medical device sales representative, she turned her focus and devotion to candle creation.

Her creativity was sparked during the year leading up to her wedding. She knew she was going to miss the creative outlet she was enjoying by planning and organizing all of the details. Inspired by a family member who made her own candles, Janet purchased a kit to learn the craft and then she enrolled in a local class, which further piqued her interest.

Janet Mary Catherine (Jamcat Candles, LLC) followed her passion along this unexpected but natural career transition. She is caring for others in a new way by creating handcrafted, natural soy candles that are as close to natural as possible. They provide external beauty, aromatic scent, and a healthy glow. Janet believes that one of the reasons people truly enjoy candles is because they elicit a personal connection to someone, somewhere, or something and therefore can be a source of joy. Scent is very powerful, and most of Janet’s creations are inspired by childhood memories, family members, and happy times.

Carefully Curated Vessels Can Be Repurposed

Janet carefully selects vessels she personally identifies with because she wants to present her customers with candles they will feel good about displaying in their own home or presenting as a gift to others.

“A candle should look as beautiful as it smells, enhancing the beauty of one’s home through light and scent.”

Janet dreams of sharing her personal expression of love and thoughtful attention with the world by having a strong presence in retail outlets nationwide. Currently, her candles can be found in Tootie & Tallulah’s, an adorable shop located in Berkeley; and at Aesthetic Theory Detroit MedSpa in Grosse Pointe Park. Janet is quite often a featured artist at the Leon & Lulu seasonal Artists’ Markets in Clawson. She hopes to work with businesses that are interested in wholesale partnerships.

Jamcat Candles are an investment in creating an elevated experience in your own home.

They are an element of beauty that can be repurposed after the candle has been consumed. Janet’s customers tell her they have used them to display makeup brushes or to hold their jewelry, and they have even used them as a beautiful vase for flowers.

In celebration of Janet’s birthday on Oct. 14, she is offering two days of special discounts. People who sign up to her email list will get 15% off their first order and will receive updates on events and promotions. Grosse Pointe Chamber Bucks are also available. GrossePointeChamber.com

Holiday gift boxes will soon be available for $50. With names like, Ho Ho Ho, Sleigh Ride, and C is for Cookie, how can anyone resist ordering? Each box will contain two 7-ounce candle tins, a wick trimmer, and a room spray. Subscribe to her newsletter to find out what scent options will be offered. Janet is currently developing a brand new line of room and toilet sprays to her collection.

One of Janet’s favorite sayings is “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

"I am so grateful for and proud of what I have accomplished in life and am truly blessed with my health, family, friends, husband, and my community. I am humbled and honored to create someone’s next best friend.”
