The coffee scene in Kansas City is huge - it's full of unique shops and with the drinks the match. We all know and love the pumpkin spice latte (or PSL) but sometimes we need to mix it up with something a little bit different. Last year I created a guide to unique or non-traditional fall drinks across the metro on the Best Bites KC Blog. It's getting a little make over this year, with a few repeats and a few new additions.
It's important to note that these are seasonal items and availability can vary. Regardless, you should get out and support your local coffee shops and maybe try something new! All of these drinks are available for carry out, so you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.
Eve's Fallen Apple
The Wild Way -- KC Metro
Apple and coffee may not immediately come to mind as a pair, but Christine has outdone herself yet again with this fall drink. Crafted with Louisburg Cider, nitro cold brew, and cream and topped with a coconut sugar caramel dipped apple and a dusting of cinnamon, this drink is perfect for when you’re feeling fall, but Kansas City weather feels otherwise. As she says, it’s pairs perfectly with those 90º September (or October) days! Find this drink (and the Wild Way trailer) at the Overland Park Farmers Market, Brookside, The Wild Warehouse, and other locations across the Kansas City Metro.
Sweet Potato Latte
Monarch Coffee -- Kansas City, MO
Made with sweet potato, clove, and brown sugar, this latte is basically like drinking a sweet potato casserole (but better). It may sound different, but it’s fall perfection. Not too sweet, but the toasted marshmallow it’s topped with adds a wonderful amount of sweet and toasty flavor notes (plus, who doesn’t love a good toasted marshmallow). This one is available hot or chilled, as well as on-the-go.
Maple Spice Latte
The Bean Coffee Co -- Spring Hill, KS
Located along historic Main Street in Spring Hill is the Bean Coffee. This family-friendly shop has an extensive seasonal menu that rotates throughout the year. One of the features on the fall menu is the maple spice latte. This warm combination of maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon is just what you need to cozy up on a cold day. It's basically breakfast in a cup. Of course if you want to pair it with some food, the Belgian waffles or a local pastry make for an excellent pairing.
Apple Bourbon Latte
Third Space Coffee -- Bonner Springs, KS
One of Third Space's many house made syrups is apple bourbon. It's the perfect blend of the classic apple flavors of fall with the warm notes of bourbon. If you're looking to take it a step further, combine it with either the salted caramel or brown sugar syrups. Both are, again, house made, and both add sweet, salty, and warm, cozy flavors. Enjoy it hot or iced!
Bourbon Caramel Latte
McLain's Market -- Shawnee, OP, Waldo
McLain's has been a staple in the Kansas City area for 75 years now. Of course the menu and offerings have changed over time (though the cup cookies hold a special place in my heart), but one seasonal favorite is the bourbon caramel latte. Such a fantastic variation on a caramel latte, as well as another good bourbon flavored latte. Apparently bourbon is one of the new flavors of fall. Give this one a try and see for yourself.
Coco-Caramel Mocha
The Roasterie - Kansas City Area
This mocha was absolute heaven. The caramel flavor was amazing and it wasn’t too rich. A great twist on a classic mocha, especially if that's your go-to order. The toasted coconut on top was a great touch. It was the perfect drink for hanging out under the plane!
