As Lantana, TX homeowners, we’ve been warned thousands of times over about the importance of changing our HVAC air filter. After all, a dirty air filter reduces critical airflow to your heating and air conditioning system and makes the unit work significantly harder to keep air circulating in your home to maintain comfort year-round. The next thing you know, your system is constantly running, which leads to more calls to the repair guy and more money out of your pocket.

All because we didn’t change the air filter! But how often should you be changing your HVAC air filter?

It Depends on the Size of the Air Filter!

Air filters are important because they remove dust, dirt, pollen, pet dander, and other particles from the air so that they aren’t constantly re-circulated throughout every room in your home for you and your family to breathe in. Air filters come in a variety of sizes and types depending on your unit and home’s unique needs, but they’re generally made of spun fiberglass material or from pleated paper or cloth enclosed in a cardboard frame.

This makes them lightweight and relatively easy for any homeowner to change out when it’s time to do so.

Generally, most air filter manufacturers, like General ElectricFiltreteHEPA, and Honeywell, and HVAC companies, recommend changing your air filter every three months. But a lot of that depends on the size and quality of your air filter.

At A&A Air in Lantana, TX, we recommend changing out 1-inch air filters (usually in your wall or ceiling) every month.

If you have a 4-inch filter, we recommend changing those out twice a year.

You Can Typically Tell If Your HVAC Air Filter Needs to Be Changed!

Here are a few signs that your HVAC air filter should be changed out asap:

1. The filter looks clogged, flimsy, and dirty.

2. Your electric bills keep rising for no reason.

3. Your home is constantly dusty.

4. The AC unit is running hotter than normal.

5. It takes longer to heat or cool your home.

6. You or your family members are having allergy symptoms.

7. Dust and dirt are collecting around your AC vents.

8. You can’t remember the last time you changed your HVAC air filter.
