There's a moment every speller knows — standing at the microphone, the word hanging in the air, the silence of a room waiting. For Yajur Subramaniam, that moment came on one of the biggest stages in academic competition.
The seventh grader at Cedar Hill Preparatory School in Somerset recently competed in the 98th Scripps National Spelling Bee, held at the iconic DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Yajur earned his spot among hundreds of the nation's most accomplished young spellers, representing communities across the United States and beyond — and finished 140th in the nation.
For a student to reach the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the journey is long before the spotlight ever hits. It takes months of dedicated study, an extraordinary command of language and etymology, and the kind of quiet discipline that doesn't always make headlines — but absolutely should.
Yajur's achievement is a reflection of exactly the qualities Cedar Hill Preparatory School works to cultivate in every student. Guided by the IB Learner Profile, CHP students are encouraged to be inquirers, thinkers, and risk-takers — and Yajur embodied all three the moment he stepped onto that national stage.
