Bellevue local, Elisa Yip, has been designing knitwear for over 20+ years. “I love the complexity in creating an entire garment with a piece of string. From yarns to stitches to patterns, then knitting them into the finest of tops and bottoms with endless possibilities,” says Yip. She enjoyed a design career at Nordstrom, until unfortunately – or possibly fortunately - the pandemic changed things. “I had lost my job at Nordstrom as a result of the pandemic. I'd always dreamt of becoming an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. So instead of trying to find a job, I created a job for myself by starting a company right in my own home Bellevue. This was my chance of making it happen, whether I succeed or not.”

SSKEIN, Yips luxury knitwear company, is modern and sustainable. With definitive silhouettes, attention to detail and timeless pieces; SSKEIN’s designs are suited for the modern-day woman to be worn for years to come. Yip is passionate about creating high quality versatile product with the focus on sustainability and eco-friendly practices. “From packaging to sourcing and business method, everything we do and the steps we take, have intention and purpose,” says Yip.

Of course, launching a new business during a pandemic has had its challenges. With fashion, people like to touch and feel, and the pandemic made it difficult for Yip to meet with customers in person. She worked hard to creatively solve problems by hosting virtual trunk shows, seeking press, interviews, webinar series and more. “I will not give up. I have too much on the line and many are rooting for me.”

In 2021, Yip is hopeful she will finally be able to get in front of customers and share more about SSKEIN. “It truly takes a visionary mindset to design a full fashion sweater. I believe the category is underserved in offering comfort and ease to women working from home.”
