A Breath of Fresh Air: Spring Cleaning Made Simple

Nichole Porter, owner of Merry Maids of Omaha, shares some helpful tips regarding spring cleaning.

Warm weather is arriving, so pollen, dirt, dust, and dander will try to set up shop in your home. A spring-cleaning session is the perfect way to refresh your home for the season and a great way to give yourself a head start on any springtime projects you might have planned around the house.

Helpful Tips for Spring Cleaning:

Tip #1: Declutter and Organize

Decluttering or organizing can give you a sense of accomplishment and an improved mood. Porter recommends discarding old and expired makeup, updating your house first aid kits, tossing expired medication, storing winter items for next year, and donating unused clothing to local community organizations.

Tip #2: Eliminate Dust, Dander, and Pollen

Minimize seasonal allergies in your home by eliminating dust, dander, and pollen. To eliminate these, Porter recommends keeping windows closed during pollen season, especially in the bedroom where you spend most of your time. Wash bedding in hot water, including mattress pads and pillowcase covers.

Tip #3: Freshen up Your Space Before Warmer Weather Arrives

By freshening up your home before the warmer weather sets in, you can remove lingering odors that have built up over time. Porter recommends freshening up your dishwasher by placing one cup of vinegar in a glass bowl in the top rack and running a high heat cycle. Once the cycle is complete, remove the bowl, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom basin, and run a second cycle.
