The Allendale Mural Project showcases the power of community collaboration, art, and history. As the borough’s mayor, Amy Wilczynski, outlines the ambitious plans for this revitalization effort, it becomes clear that the project is not just about beautifying a wall—it's about uniting residents and honoring the town's heritage.
A Legacy of Art
Thirty years ago, the original mural, conceived by the late Styles Thomas, transformed an unsightly wall into a canvas celebrating Allendale's community and history. However, the elements took their toll, and over the years, the mural fell into disrepair. Wilczynski, who has dedicated over a decade to the Council and is now in her first term as mayor, felt compelled to restore this vital piece of local culture.
"I think a project like this is something that makes Allendale special," she says. With an eye on beautification, she initiated conversations with residents about reinvigorating the mural just before the COVID-19 pandemic.
An Ambitious Revival
The new mural, directed by renowned sculptor Simon Rigg, aims to be a stunning 3D artwork, or “bas-relief,” that will incorporate contributions from local students. Schools across the borough, including Hillside and Brookside, are participating in the project by creating clay panels that represent significant historical landmarks of Allendale, like the Highlands Presbyterian Church and the celery farm.
Rigg shares, "One hundred fifty-five students, from third grade through senior year, learned unique methods of creating and glazing tiles using several tons of porcelain clay. This was a completely new experience for all the students, offering much more than just working with clay."
"The kids worked on these clay components, and Simon fired them. This is such a unique opportunity for them," Wilczynski explains. The mural will serve as a mosaic of the community’s history, capturing its essence and inviting future generations to connect with their roots.
Community Engagement and Fundraising
Community involvement is at the heart of the project. Beyond the artistic contributions, local residents have been encouraged to donate, with various fundraising initiatives underway. Wilczynski mentions that individuals who contribute will have their names featured around the mural, while larger donations will be commemorated on a bronze plaque.
"We’re looking for corporate sponsors to help us complete the project," she shares, emphasizing the ongoing nature of fundraising efforts. The goal is to complete the installation by the first quarter of next year, weather permitting.
A Cultural Landmark for the Future
Once completed, the mural will not only restore a historical element but also create a mini pocket park in front of it, enhancing the community's public space. This new gathering area will invite families, friends, and visitors to appreciate the art and history that encapsulates Allendale’s identity.
Wilczynski notes the profound impact this project has already had on students involved. "They’re excited to be part of history," she says, reflecting on how the experience empowers young residents. Many have expressed their eagerness to return with their own families one day to see their contributions immortalized.
More Than Just Paint on a Wall
The Allendale Mural Project reflects the dedication of residents and leaders like Mayor Wilczynski who understand that public art can foster pride and connection in a town. As the mural takes shape, it will stand as a vibrant reminder of Allendale’s past, present, and future—a visual narrative crafted by the hands of its community.
