WITH HONOR AND GRATITUDE

Reflecting On The Service And Sacrifice Behind Veterans Day

Each year on November 11, communities across the country come together to recognize the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to pause, reflect and express gratitude to those who made the commitment to serve our country.

The day has its roots in the end of World War I, when fighting ceased on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Originally recognized as Armistice Day, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.

While Memorial Day specifically honors those who died while serving our country, Veterans Day recognizes all who have served, both living and deceased.

Behind every uniform is a story. For many veterans, service meant months or years away from family, missed holidays and milestones, and sacrifices that continued long after their time in uniform ended. Some served overseas, while others served here at home. Each raised a hand and committed to serve something greater than themselves.

Veterans Day gives us a chance not only to recognize that service but also to teach younger generations the importance of gratitude, sacrifice and community. Attend a local Veterans Day ceremony, fly the American flag, support a veteran-owned business, write a note of thanks or take the time to listen to a veteran share their story.

This November 11, we honor those who have served and the families who supported them along the way. No gesture of gratitude is too small. Sometimes the most meaningful way to honor a veteran begins with two simple words: thank you.
