Hidden within the hills of Somerset County, Leonard J. Buck Garden offers visitors a peaceful escape into a dramatic woodland landscape. Created in the 1930s by geologist Leonard J. Buck and landscape architect Zenon Schreiber, the 33-acre garden was designed to work with the area’s natural rocky terrain, flowing streams, and changing elevations. Rather than formal landscaping, the garden embraces a more organic beauty, where flowers bloom from cliffsides and winding paths lead through shaded ravines and moss-covered stone. Each season transforms the space, from vibrant spring rhododendrons to fiery autumn foliage. More than simply a garden, it feels like a hidden world dedicated to exploration, quiet reflection, and discovering nature slowly and intentionally within one of New Jersey's treasures.
