Everyone has a humble beginning when becoming a small business owner. Those moments of struggle, trial and error, and working with new people are what drives a business owner. Like many entrepreneurs, some people go into business only thinking about the now and not so much the future. They often think about how they can stand out from others in this instant instead of laying a strong business foundation.
Chances are, they may not even realize that constant adaptation through time is what sparks a legacy. For Ray Huffines, the general manager of Huffines Auto Group, dedicating time to fostering relationships with the community while staying current with the trends has allowed Huffines to grow for 100 years.
“I grew up working in the family business watching and learning from my father and grandfather. This is what I always wanted to do and I’m so grateful and honored that I have had the opportunity to carry on the legacy,” he said.
It all started in Denton, Texas, in 1924 when Ray's grandfather, J. L. Huffines Sr., first opened Huffines Motor Company’s doors. The economic crisis caused by the Great Depression did not discourage or change Huffines Motor Company’s commitment to customer service. The dealership was always known for its fairness and integrity to succeed during the most suppressing times, even accepting livestock and farm implements in exchange for vehicles during the 1930s.
Following his father’s footsteps, J. L. Huffines Jr. expanded the family business across North Texas. He not only carried the reputation of stellar customer service with him, but eventually created a new one, which was community involvement. To this very day, Huffines Motor Company, now Huffines Auto Group, is headed by third- and fourth-generation leaders Ray Huffines and his son, Sam Huffines. As reputation precedes their legacy, the dealership is one of the largest leading motor companies in North Texas.
“Over the years, we have had the opportunity to grow and expand with multiple franchises in multiple cities, which has resulted in expanding our team members to over 900 today," Ray Huffines said. "I am so proud of our team members who carry out our core values to serve our customers. The continuity of our team members of whom many have partnered with us for decades gives me great satisfaction."
Huffines Auto Group has been recognized as a Texas Treasure Business by the Texas Historical Commission for its contributions to the state’s community and its economy. Huffines Auto Group was also named one of the Top Places to Work by The Dallas Morning News eleven times and has received multiple J. D. Power Dealer of Excellence Awards.
To celebrate 100 years, Huffines has launched a community campaign that involves its iconic “Huffines HAS IT!” jingle. For every performance sung by residents, the company will donate $100 to local charities.
“We owe much of our success over the past 100 years to the overwhelming loyalty of our communities. Their support has been, and continues to be, instrumental to the success of Huffines,” Ray proudly said.
It's nice to know that some things never change in our community. If there is one thing you can count on when it comes to Huffines Auto Group, it's giving back. Since the very beginning of its operation, community involvement and commitment have always been one of its missions. offers a wide range of automotive brands, including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Kia, and Hyundai.
