Johnny Jacoby was an icon in Windsor. Known by so many for his friendly face, happy demeanor, and of course his constant companion - his bicycle. Because of his love of Windsor, the pride he took in this community, and his steady involvement in anything town-related, he became well acquainted with the goings-on, and affectionately earned the title of “unofficial town mayor.” Johnny tragically lost his life in May of 2015.
Johnny worked part-time at the local King Soopers and part-time for the town of Windsor. His family, friends, and the community at large remember him for his selfless conduct, claiming “he would give the shirt off his back for his neighbor or the community…” Always ready to lend a helping hand, a lover of NASCAR and sports (he often attended the Windsor High School sporting events), and a bit of a “jokester,” says his brother, Mark and Mark’s wife, Kristen. Johnny’s memory is sprinkled throughout the town - at the Windsor Recreation Center, Windsor Main Park, and where he worked - each a quiet reminder of the life he lived.
The Jacoby family’s legacy runs deep in Windsor, and they couldn’t be more honored by the Jacoby Meadows project created in the spirit of Johnny, embodying all that he represented. Recognizing a need for affordable housing specifically geared toward the 55+ communities, the Loveland and Windsor Housing Authorities partnered together and rose to the cause by creating the Jacoby Meadows affordable housing community with the marked intention of honoring Johnny’s memory and keeping his legacy alive. The housing project has allowed long-time Windsor residents to stay in Windsor, another demonstration of Johnny's commitment to the community. The Jacoby family is grateful not only for the opportunity to memorialize Johnny in such a dynamic and fitting way, but also for being able to support the Windsor community by fulfilling this need.
Equally as fitting is the location of Jacoby Meadows - directly across the street from Windsor Meadows where Johnny was a popular resident, befriending many of the other residents, (some of which remain family friends), participating in the apartment complex’s yard sales, picnics, and other activities.
At the time of this writing, Jacoby Meadows’ 62 units are 100% leased, another testimony to not only the need, but the answer to the call - help given in the same manner in which Johnny helped others. There are both one and two-bedroom units with washers and dryers, kitchens, generously-sized bedrooms, and storage. Eric Hull, Loveland Housing Authority’s Director of Real Estate Development, expresses appreciation for the leasing staff’s tireless work in reviewing applications and approving leases.
The Sunset Lounge community space located on the third floor, provides expansive views of the Rocky Mountains, includes an outdoor deck, and is available for the residents to use and host family gatherings and special occasions.
An indoor community space is also available for resident events like holiday gatherings, family birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, and the like. These spaces foster interaction between residents - something that speaks very much to the legacy Johnny Jacoby leaves behind.
A project like this does not come together as a solo venture, but as Eric shares, “To pull a project off like this, it really does take a village.” He thanks the town of Windsor and the Windsor Housing Authority Board of Commissioners for their unwavering support, as well as that of their project investors.
The Jacoby family thanks the town of Windsor, the mayor, the staff, and everyone else who supported them through the loss of their beloved Johnny.
Johnny Jacoby made a lasting impact on the town and community of Windsor, evidenced by the many ways the town has kept his memory alive. Jacoby Meadows, driven by the enduring influence and reputation of Johnny, makes an important contribution to the way he will be remembered.
