A Heart for the Home: A Burns Park Transformation

In the historic neighborhoods of Ann Arbor, homes often carry stories that span generations. For one residence in Burns Park, that story has a unique recurring theme: a partnership with Rochman Design Build that spans two different families.

Having completed two significant projects for the home’s previous owners, the team was invited back by the new family to write the next chapter. This deep familiarity with the home’s "bones" allowed for a kitchen addition that feels less like a renovation and more like a natural evolution of the 1920s architecture.

Design with a Global Heart - The aesthetic of the kitchen was driven by the homeowners' personal history. The backsplash serves as a quiet focal point, featuring hand-painted blue and white tiles—a deliberate choice that reminds the couple of the "Old World" charm of Europe, where they spent their honeymoon. It’s a sophisticated, tactile reminder of a personal milestone, framed by crisp white Shaker-style cabinetry and professional-grade stainless steel.

The Nurtured Kitchen - While the aesthetics are striking, the space was engineered for the rhythms of daily life:

  • The Avid Baker’s Sanctuary: As a passionate baker, the homeowner required a dedicated workspace. The layout includes specialized baking zones and custom shelving designed to keep essential tools and ingredients within reach, transforming holiday prep into a seamless experience.

  • Garden to Table: The farmhouse sink isn't just a focal point; in this home, it’s a functional extension of the backyard. It often overflows with fresh, vibrant greens harvested directly from the homeowner’s own vegetable garden.

  • The "Pass-Through" Connection: One of the most innovative features is the wide kitchen window. On the exterior, a custom-built shelf transforms the window into a functional pass-through. It’s the perfect spot for the kids to pull up a stool on the porch for an afternoon snack while staying connected to the activity in the kitchen.

A Story of Stewardship Beyond the high-end finishes and architectural arches, this project highlights the importance of long-term trust. By returning to a home they knew so intimately, the Rochman team ensured that the new addition honored the "bones" of the past while providing a modern, "nurtured home" for the family of today.

In Burns Park, legacy isn't just about what is preserved—it's about what is thoughtfully added.
