The State Fair of Texas has always been part of David Osborne's life. The Garland, Texas native fondly recalls visits to the annual event—eating delicious fried foods, strolling through the Automobile building and livestock barns, attending the Red River Rivalry, and even riding the Comet Coaster, the iconic wooden roller coaster on the Midway that retired in 1986.
For 18 years, Osborne has turned his love for the State Fair into a more hands-on role as a volunteer. He serves as an Advisory Board Member & Chair of the Development Cabinet, helping steward the Fair's nonprofit mission and community engagement. He has been instrumental in growing the Big Tex Scholarship Program, where he takes a personal interest in the Youth Livestock Scholarship.
"The kids are the reason I got involved as a volunteer. I knew I could help raise more money for the kids—it is an easy sell, because 100% of every single dollar raised goes to the kids," Osborne said. "The kids are our future, and we need to help our future. I like doing it, because it makes me feel good."
As a nonprofit organization, the State Fair of Texas exists to celebrate Texas while investing in its future. Through scholarships and educational opportunities, year-round community initiatives, and the preservation of Fair Park, the State Fair's impact extends far beyond its iconic 24-day annual event.
Osborne, who now lives in Preston Hollow, worked his way up to President & Chief Executive Officer at United Mechanical in Dallas, Texas. "After graduating from Garland High School, I went to work for United Mechanical for $2 an hour," he recalls. "Now, I am one of the owners."
He has seen the strides the Fair has made to connect with its neighbors, working as a trusted partner within South Dallas. He wants more people to know about the "impact the Fair has on the community, Dallas, and the whole of Texas" through its dedicated philanthropic work. Attending the 24-day fall fundraiser or one of our other fundraising events is just one of the countless ways he hopes his neighbors will join him in investing in future generations and celebrating all things Texan.
"The kids are our future, and every dollar we raise helps create opportunities that will impact Texas for generations to come."
