A Letter to My Sons

Bellevue School District Super Intentendent shares a note to his sons for Fathers Day

Dear Mateo and Joaquín:

In just over two years, with a lot of help from your mother, I became the father of two wonderful boys.  Being your papa is such an incredible blessing that is coupled with great responsibility. As I watch you grow and thrive, I am filled with immense joy and happiness. The curiosity, imagination, wonder, and unconditional love with which you experience our world is truly awe-inspiring. And I promise to be with you as we navigate life to its fullest.

Your lineage is one of struggle and hardship, but also perseverance. Your ancestors from Mexico and Eastern Europe could only dream about the many opportunities that are within your grasp. The names we gave you are very special. Not only do they celebrate your heritage, they are also constant reminders of the blessings you are to us.

Your mama and I love you so much. We love your smiles and laughter. We love your quizzical appreciation of one another. We love the constant action you bring to our lives.

As your parents, we will do everything we can to support you and foster a strong relationship with our family and one another. And, we will always focus on helping you become young men who:

●      Are kind and respectful, take the time to listen and learn from multiple perspectives, and recognize that we each experience the world differently;

●      Respect all people and treat others with dignity and care knowing everyone has an inherent right to be valued for their humanity;

●      Help others and stand up for those whose voices are not heard and those who are marginalized; and

●      Develop and appreciate a strong connection with your roots through language, culture, traditions, and experiences.

You are our precious gifts and bring an awesome light to our world.

We love you!
