A Local's Guide to Fort Worth Camping

How to Make the Most of North Texas Springtime

In Fort Worth, spring is that sweet spot between winter’s chill and summer’s blazing heat—the perfect window to pack up the tent and head outdoors. Before the North Texas sun turns relentless, we’re gifted a few golden weeks of warm afternoons, cool evenings, and wide-open skies that seem to stretch on forever.

This is the season when the prairie grasses start to green, wildflowers dot the trails, and lake waters shimmer under comfortably mild temperatures. It’s a chance to slow down, swap traffic noise for birdsong, and rediscover the landscapes that make our corner of Texas worth exploring. This guide is here to help you make the most of spring camping season around Fort Worth, before the temperatures climb and summer schedules take over.

Ways to Unplug and Unwind

Camping doesn’t have to be packed with plans to be meaningful. In fact, some of the most memorable moments happen when you intentionally leave space in the schedule. When calendars fill quickly and days tend to run long, a spring camping trip offers a rare opportunity to shift gears.

1.     Slow mornings – Ease into the day without alarms or strict plans; allow the quiet to set the tone.

2.     Nature watching – Spend time observing the details: drifting clouds, twinkling stars in the wide-open Texas sky, and birds moving from tree to tree.

3.     Evening strolls – Take a walk through the campground as the air cools and the light softens.

Finding a Campsite:

Where you set up can make all the difference in how your trip feels. Around Fort Worth, spring weather is usually mild, but picking the right spot will help you stay comfortable and relaxed all weekend long. 20 minutes southwest of downtown Fort Worth lies Benbrook Lake, home to many campsites.

1.     South Holiday Park

Location: West side of Benbrook Lake

South Holiday Park offers something for every kind of camper. Enjoy scenic trails perfect for hiking and horseback riding, plus convenient access to a boat launch for days on the water. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and year-round camping make it a reliable, adventure-filled getaway in any season.

2.     Bear Creek Campground

Location: South side of Benbrook Lake, east side of Bear Creek

Bear Creek Campground offers easy boat launching and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. It’s a great spot to connect with nature, but keep in mind, that camping is season and only available from April to September, making it best suited for spring and summer outdoor adventures.

Know Before You Go:

1.     Reservations: Many popular sites fill up fast; book early to secure your spot.

2.     Weather: Spring can bring sudden storms and cool nights; pack layers and rain gear.

3.     Fire Rules: Check for any burn bans or fire restrictions before lighting a campfire. Follow local guidelines for firewood.

4.     Wildlife: Be aware of local animals and invasive species. Store food securely and remove plants, seeds, animals and mud from boots, gear, pets and vehicles.

5.     Boat Gear: Clean, drain, and dry boats and other equipment that contacts water.

6.     Pets: Check pet policies for your campsite and always keep pets leashed.

7.     Check Park Hours: Some parks have specific opening and closing times for day visitors or gates. Respect quiet hours for the benefit of all campers!

8.     Etiquette: Share trails and campsites respectfully with others. Leave no trace and dispose of all trash properly.

Nothing says camping like a meal cooked over an open fire. From sizzling foil packets to classic s’mores, campfire cooking turns every meal into an adventure (but that doesn't mean it needs to be difficult).
