When I became a husband and, later, a father, I began to understand love in a new way. Not just the emotional side but the kind that looks ahead, prepares, and quietly protects your family long before they ever know they need protecting. Estate planning, for me, has become one of the clearest ways to live out that kind of love.

It’s not dramatic or glamorous. No one celebrates when you sign a will or complete a trust. But the impact is profound. It is a quiet, steady way of telling your family: “I want you to be cared for, even if I can’t be here to do it myself.”

 How My Calling Began

When I was serving as general counsel during a corporate transition at a tech firm, I started practicing estate planning on the side. What drew me in wasn’t just the legal work—it was the way this area of law allows me to live out my faith in a practical, everyday way. It gives me the chance to help families steward what God has entrusted to them with clarity and peace.

Proverbs 27:23 says, “Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds.” While most of us no longer manage livestock, the principle still applies: God calls us to pay attention to the responsibilities He has placed in our hands our homes, our resources, and the people we love. Estate planning is simply a modern expression of that diligence.

 Why Planning Matters

Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories of families thrown into chaos upon losing a loved one because there was no plan in place. Not dramatic, unusual stories but situations that happen every day:

·      Loved ones not knowing who was supposed to handle finances.

·      Family members disagreeing about medical decisions.

·      Dependents left without clear guardianship instructions.

·      Spouses discovering that assets weren’t titled the way they assumed.

And in the hardest moments of life, uncertainty makes everything heavier. What grief already complicates, a lack of planning multiplies.

On the other hand, families who have gone through thoughtful planning often experience something entirely different—less conflict, fewer surprises, and a sense of peace knowing their loved one had already made decisions with their care in mind.

 Planning Is a Love Letter

A will doesn’t just distribute belongings. A trust doesn’t just organize finances. A power of attorney doesn’t just delegate authority. Together, these become a “love letter” to your family—a letter that says:

“Here’s how I want to take care of you.”

“Here is the person I trust to help you if you ever need it.”

“Here is clarity so you won’t be burdened with confusion.”

Love isn’t only expressed in words or feelings. Sometimes it looks like making decisions today that will bless the people you love tomorrow.

Faith and Stewardship Go Hand in Hand

My business is named Faithful Stewardship for a reason. Scripture reminds us: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Estate planning is part of that faithfulness—not from fear, but from wisdom. It means acknowledging that life is fragile, time is uncertain, and preparation is an act of care for the people God has entrusted to you.

Psalm 90:12 says: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Planning doesn’t mean expecting the worst. It means being wise with the time and responsibility God has given.

Why This Matters to Our Community

My wife and I are raising our daughter here in the Rockwall area, and I’ve come to see how deeply families in our community care about one another. People want to do right by those they love. They just often underestimate how important planning truly is, or they don’t know where to start.

The February Rockwall City Lifestyle Local Love issue is the perfect place for this topic. Estate planning is an act of love, order, and protection. It’s something you do so your family’s hardest moments are made easier. It’s a way of saying, “My love for you includes preparing for what I cannot control.”

 When You’re Ready to Begin

If this resonates with you—if you’ve been meaning to get your affairs in order or simply want to make things easier for your loved ones—I offer a free initial consultation to walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you understand what a thoughtful, God-honoring plan could look like for your family.

Estate planning is not about fear or wealth. It’s about faith, stewardship, clarity, and care. It is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give to the people who matter most.
