Disney enthusiasts, music aficionados, pop culture fans, and kids of all ages, are in for a late February treat as The Venice Symphony, in celebration of its 50th anniversary season, presents "Magical Maestro: A Tribute to Alan Menken." This musical extravaganza promises to deliver an enchanting experience for all.

Collaborating with members of Sarasota’s Key Chorale, The Symphony’s tribute features a mesmerizing array of music from Disney classics such as "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid," and "Aladdin.” The three performances will be on February 23 at 7:30 p.m., and February 24 at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Venice Performing Arts Center.

A prolific and multi-award-winning composer, Menken was born on July 22, 1949, and his decades-long career has defined an entire generation of Disney films and stage shows. His work has earned him eight Academy Awards, eleven Grammy Awards, a Tony Award, and a Daytime Emmy: placing him into an elite entertainment category, that of EGOT recipient.

At that level of popularity, Menken’s compositions have transcended the boundaries of the screen and stage to become an integral part of popular culture. The breadth of his musical portfolio consists of timeless melodies that have captivated and inspired generations of fans around the globe.

When asked about his composing philosophy, Menken answered that he feels songs “should have an infectious melody and rhythm (and) should elicit an emotion of happiness, or of celebration, or of sadness, or of sorrow, or of love, or of laughter.”
