A Matter of Trust Butler Injury Law · Austin, TX

Rian Butler Built His Firm Around a Simple Idea: Clients Deserve Time, Communication, and a More Personal Experience

For Rian Butler, building Butler Injury Law was never only about opening a personal injury firm. It was about creating a different kind of workplace and more personal client experience.

The six-person firm focuses on cases where someone has been hurt because another person or company failed to do what they should have done. But Rian draws a line between his practice and the high-volume model people often associate with personal injury law.

“We are not a mass marketing firm that churns as many cases as possible,” Rian says. “We like to get to know our clients and get each one the best result possible under the circumstances.”

That philosophy came from experience. Rian worked at larger firms and learned valuable lessons about practicing law, running a business, and working with clients. He also learned what he wanted to do differently. Several team members came from similar environments, where micromanagement and pressure shaped the workday.

At Butler Injury Law, employees are trusted to care about the work because they want to do it well, not because they are satisfying a report or quota. Rian believes that when people are happier at work, clients feel the difference.

Personal injury law brings attorneys into people’s lives during painful, uncertain moments. Clients may be facing medical treatment or a legal process they never expected. For Rian, that trust is not something to take lightly.

“It’s a big deal to have that trust,” he says. “It’s a big deal to talk with family members and meet with them and have them put their trust and faith in you.”

Communication is central to the firm’s approach. Rian says many attorneys in Austin can handle a car crash case, work up a demand, and negotiate a settlement. What clients remember, though, is how they were treated: whether calls were returned, questions were answered, and they understood what was happening.

“Our tagline talks about a weight being lifted,” he says. “That came from actually mapping out what a client goes through from that first meeting to the day, the week, the month after. That’s really the goal.”

Because cases can stretch for months or years, the firm uses updates, check-ins, and clear explanations to help clients understand where things stand. The goal is not to bury people in legal details but to give them enough context to feel less alone.

“We try to make sure people understand where we are, what just happened, and what’s coming next,” Rian says. “That’s what actually settles the nerves.”

As Rian reflects on the firm’s growth, gratitude comes easily. He is thankful for former employers who shaped his skills, referral sources who trusted him early, employees who left larger firms for something smaller, and clients who choose Butler Injury Law despite flashier names.

He is especially grateful to his wife, who supported the leap into business ownership.

“There was no guaranteed paycheck, no corporate client keeping the lights on,” he says. “She’s fairly risk-averse by nature, and she trusted me anyway.”

Working with people after serious accidents has changed how Rian thinks about family and time. Wrongful death cases, in particular, stay with him.

“When someone has lost a loved one, no amount of money brings them back,” he says. “The best we can do is hold the responsible party accountable.”

Those cases are part of why work-life balance matters to him. They remind him that ordinary days with family are not guaranteed.

As Butler Injury Law continues to grow, Rian hopes Central Texas comes to know the firm for its compassion, patience, and strong legal work without the big-firm churn.

“We’re small but tight-knit,” he says, “and we do work that holds up against any of the big firms, with the patience and time to actually talk to people.”
