These days, a home is more than just a nice place to eat and sleep. More than ever, our home is our office, our gym, a place for entertainment and a refuge for rest. Since the pandemic, Tish McLemore, owner and lead designer of McLemore Design Group, has seen more and more homeowners choosing to remake their space into a place they enjoy.

“People are turning their homes into their retreat space,” Tish says.

One of her latest endeavors is a modern, four-bedroom custom home in Bridgeland which she began designing when her clients had only the blueprints. Owners Clayton and Shanna Clark wanted a home with a contemporary, elegant look that still felt cozy. Together with Tish, they created a space full of clean lines, eye-catching accents and practical features that fit their everyday lifestyle. Tish worked with inspiration from the owners and detailed conversations to establish the look and feel of the home.

“All the decisions were very carefully made to make sure it was a reflection of them,” Tish says.

The kitchen, the heart of the home, is a fine entertainment space with a sea-pearl colored quartzite island, matching countertops and ample room for guest seating. The kitchen’s backsplash–a dark stone set in a herringbone pattern–provides an attractive contrast to the kitchen’s light and airy ambiance. The walk-in pantry, done by Closet Concepts HTX, is a tidy, organized storage space for grab-and-go snacks, cooking essentials and chilled beverages inside the Clark’s antique-style refrigerator.

The kitchen opens into the home’s spacious living room where family and guests can gather around a striking 60-inch tiled electric fireplace. Around the corner, the Clark’s wanted a spacious bar with room for multiple TV sets. The couple, avid sports enthusiasts, wanted to be sure they and their guests could catch whatever sports game might be playing.

“It’s an entertaining house for sure with lots of great spaces for people,” Tish says.

Perhaps the biggest highlights of the home are the primary living quarters. The bedroom was designed as a relaxing retreat filled with plenty of windows to allow for natural light. Custom bedside lighting fixtures give an added romantic and practical feel to the space. The primary bathroom, however, is certainly the place to unwind. Designed as a spa-like environment, the room features a free-standing soaking tub with a floor-to-ceiling antiqued mirror offset by gorgeous accent lights. Behind the bathtub is a car wash-style shower with two huge entrances and floor-to-ceiling, warm-grey colored wall tile. Further inside the bathroom is a his-and-hers main closet, also from Closet Concepts HTX, complete with a revolving shoe rack, island and vanity. Whether relaxing or entertaining, the home has everything one might need.
