Nestled within the evolving naturescape of Children’s Meeting House, a new yurt has become a meaningful addition to campus life, blending tradition, innovation, and outdoor learning.
CMH, Cincinnati’s premier Nature Montessori school, provides an educational approach focused on independence, hands-on experiences, and play in non-traditional classroom settings. The decision to add the yurt was made by the playground committee.
“We’ve been thoughtfully focused on enhancing our naturescape in a way that feels authentic and aligned with CMH’s mission and values,” explains Jessica Anderson, CMH Director of Advancement. “The committee wanted to introduce a space that not only complements the natural environment but also supports imaginative play, exploration, and hands-on learning.”
“The yurt blends seamlessly with the outdoor setting while offering a unique, inviting structure for students,” adds Angie Pavao, CMH’s Outdoor Education Teacher. “It reflects our commitment to creating meaningful, nature-inspired experiences, and provides a versatile space that can be used for a variety of educational and community activities.”
With its green covering and homey indoor space, CMH’s yurt feels organic to the environment while functioning as a sheltered outdoor classroom for lessons, small gatherings, after-school clubs, meetings, and celebrations.
“It offers a calm, organic environment where students can connect with and appreciate the natural world,” Angie says. “Students meet with me there weekly to explore topics such as local habitats, plant and animal identification, stewardship, and citizen science.”
More to the point, it’s natural gathering place for both staff and students. “It’s perfect for launching hikes, restoration projects, games, data collection, as well as a space for reflection and discussion … ensuring we can prioritize outdoor education even when weather conditions limit extended time outside.”
Now a campus staple, the yurt represents CMH’s long-term commitment to outdoor education, continuing to foster curiosity, connection, and a lasting appreciation for the natural world.
