A New Hobby for a New Year

I never paid much attention to my kitchen. In fact, I never really gave it too much thought when my husband and I breezed through our home for the first time with our realtor. It was unimpressive—a simple galley kitchen with lots of cabinets and an unattractive vinyl blue countertop. But it had a working this and a working that and I was sold.

I ignored our kitchen for five years. We cooked our meals and baked cookies but never explored the cookbooks we'd been gifted or bought for ourselves. We fought over who was to do the dishes and we tried to not make any new ones once they were done, which they never were. We were in our mid-twenties and avoiding the most costly room in our home. Until the pandemic hit.

Groceries became a focal point of our day-to-day life. What can we make today? Three different meals, plus snacks of course. I got creative. I faced my unsightly kitchen head on. The later part of the year were the best days for me—toting my baby around the kitchen, reorganizing the cabinets, expanding food storage, following recipes that my younger self would've been afraid of. Ginger soup, Broccoli cheddar casserole, and my favorite dessert ever, the crackle molten pie. Our home never smelled so good and the dishes were always done.

Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration for a new hobby to emerge. Do you have a room that you never spend time in? Try living in that space and seeing where it takes you!
