A Nutcracker Christmas

Volusia Civic Ballet’s Festive Fantasy

This holiday season, the Volusia Civic Ballet (VCB) will transport audiences into a dazzling world of wonder and whimsy with their beloved production of The Nutcracker. Hosted at the historic Peabody Auditorium (600 Auditorium Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32118), this year’s performance will be a spectacular blend of artistry, tradition, and community spirit. A seasonal favorite, the production features over 70 talented dancers, 60 of whom are local children from dance studios across Central Florida, capturing the true essence of collaboration and the magic of the holidays.

Clara’s Dream: VCB's Mission of Education and Dance

Like Clara's enchanting journey through the Land of Sweets, VCB's mission began in 1996 as a registered NGO wanting to inspire wonder, educate the community, and foster a love for ballet and other forms of dance. VCB offers a unique opportunity for young dancers to collaborate across studio lines, building not only a breathtaking production but also a dance community where creativity and talent flourish. Each year, this collaboration results in a different atmosphere on stage, with each child, regardless of skill level, playing a vital role in bringing the holiday magic to life.

A Dance of Collaboration: Choreographic Brilliance in Every Scene

The beauty of the Nutcracker lies not only in the story but in the seamless coordination of talent. What makes VCB’s production so extraordinary is its unique approach to choreography. Each scene is directed by a different choreographer, weaving together a tapestry of creative visions. This multifaceted artistry ensures that no two shows are ever alike, a reason why audiences return year after year to witness something fresh and new. Jerome Divito, Artistic Director from South Beach Dance, brings this collaboration to life. Guest performers from the Cincinnati Ballet,  Melissa Gelfin (Sugar Plum Fairy) and Rafael Quenedit Castro (Cavelier) from Cincinnati Ballet add a touch of professional elegance. This year’s Clara, portrayed by a 16-year-old local dancer Juliane Beatrice Carpio, she will lead audiences on a memorable adventure through the snow-covered woods and into the heart of the holiday season.

A Whirlwind of Sweetness: The Sugar Plum Tea

Before the curtain rises, children can experience the joy of the Sugar Plum Tea—a sweet, elegant pre-show event designed to delight. For an additional $25, young guests will savor nut-free finger sandwiches, gourmet cupcakes, and chocolate milk or Lemonade. Each child receives a Nutcracker mug to take home as a keepsake. In their holiday best, children mingle, make friends, and bask in the festive atmosphere, all while learning about the world of dance. Parents are invited to observe this delightful gathering, adding a heartwarming prelude to the performance.

A Quiet Winter Waltz: Sensory-Friendly Performance

For those who prefer a shorter performance, VCB offers a sensory-friendly version of The Nutcracker on December 7th at 2 PM. Tailored specifically for children and individuals with disabilities, this condensed one-act version features a gentle narrator guiding the audience through Clara’s magical journey. With a more relaxed environment and a shorter performance, this show allows younger and sensory-sensitive audience members to enjoy the experience in comfort and ease. Each year, VCB donates tickets to nonprofits everywhere to ensure the arts reach people of all abilities.

Waltzing Into the Future: VCB’s Vision of Dance

As snowflakes fall gently on Clara’s dream world, VCB’s future glistens with new opportunities. Their spring Festival of Dance promises to bring dancers from across the region together for a two-day event celebrating the art of movement. Special guests will teach group numbers, while local studios will showcase their own pieces, all culminating in an unforgettable finale. VCB also continues its commitment to young dancers by offering scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 for graduating seniors who have been part of the production for over three years and are invested in a future of dance whether it is professionally or as a passion hobby.

Capturing Grace: A Decade of Dance Photography

For nearly a decade, Deedee Sherman and Michael Cairns have been preserving the beauty of ballet through their lenses. Deedee, a seasoned ballet student, performer, and educator, brings a wealth of dance knowledge to each shot. Michael, a renowned Orlando photographer since 1989, has an impressive background, including long-standing work with the Orlando Magic and Orlando Ballet. His current focus blends corporate photography with dance schools, competitions, and individual dancer portraits, making this duo's work a treasure trove of experience, artistry, and dedication to the art of ballet photography.

A Legacy of Nostalgia and Holiday Magic

As VCB Board President Nelly Droznin notes, “The Nutcracker is more than a performance—it’s a tradition steeped in nostalgia. Our goal is to keep that spirit alive while offering something new and different each year." Through their dedication to collaboration and community, VCB continues to weave an ever-changing tapestry of holiday magic that beckons audiences back each season.
