Tucked among the deep trees and rolling hills in the countryside near Bryant and Hefner Roads, a palace awaits.
WangShi Palace (which translates to China Palace) is the dream of D.O McCarty and his wife Victoria and his grandson Kyle and is designed to be an upscale bed and breakfast resort that is actually more than just a simple bed and breakfast.
With 26 units, each with its own private bathroom, WangShi Palace at 3108 E. Hefner Road, is a luxury stay in a peaceful country setting.
An architect himself, he studied under the famous University of Oklahoma architect professor Bruce Goff, who was also a friend of legendary architectural designer Frank Lloyd Wright. With a nod to Wright, McCarty made his home all archways, curves and angles.
“I kept adding to the home and remodeling it over the years. Thirteen years ago, my wife of 53 years passed away. After more than 50 years of marriage, I wasn’t fond of single life,” he said.
That loneliness led McCarty to China, where he met and married Jian Xiang Wang (Victoria).
“I named WangShi Palace after her, even though she didn’t want it named after her,” he said. “I’ve lived in that home since 1974, and I built the house with the idea of making it into something more.”
Although it has an Asian name, the facility is more modern contemporary with hints of Chinese art and decor.
“The house is centered around a central core that has a swimming pool in a two-story atrium,” McCarty said. “The whole house surrounds that core. There’s tons of natural light. It’s really open, so in that way, it’s like Chinese architecture. It adapts itself to the surrounding natural environment.”
MORE THAN A B&B
Every guest at WangShi Palace will have amenities that go above and beyond a typical bed and breakfast.
Visitors to the Palace have free limousine service to and from the Will Rogers Airport and to the area’s attractions in the Adventure District and to the Oklahoma City National Memorial. The staff greets every guest with complimentary wine, champagne, tea, or coffee upon arrival.
“We wanted to give people more than they could get at a typical bed and breakfast,” said McCarty. “We wanted to give them a better experience than they could get at a luxury hotel too. Everything here is luxury - the private rooms with their own private bathrooms, the linens, the towels and robes."
