A Seat at Mel’s Table

Chef Mel brings intention, creativity, and connection to every plate

After a shift in her 9–5 career, Melissa Helton was prompted to reevaluate what she wanted her life to look like. Cooking had always been a significant part of her life, with both her grandmother and her father shaping her love for food. “Cooking has always been a huge part of my story,” she says. Their influence ultimately led her to fully pursue the culinary world and turn that passion into a business.

Food had always been central to her life. Growing up, cooking was a means of connection, especially with her grandmother. Time in the kitchen was more than just preparing meals. “Being in the kitchen with her wasn’t just about the food. It was about care, creativity, and connection,” she shares.

Helton’s culinary journey began with baking, where she built a cottage bakery that marked her first step into entrepreneurship. But over time, she felt pulled toward something more expansive. She wanted to move beyond sweets and into savory cooking—into full, immersive dining experiences.

As she began cooking for a wider audience, she noticed a gap: meals that were convenient often lacked consistency, and elevated dining experiences felt out of reach for everyday life. That realization became the foundation for Mel’s Table.

Today, Helton (known to many as Chef Mel) offers personal and private chef services alongside catering, creating thoughtfully curated dining experiences for families, executives, and professional athletes alike. Her work is rooted in intention, designed to fit seamlessly into her clients’ lives while still feeling special. “It’s about creating experiences that feel both meaningful and accessible,” she says.

Her offerings range from weekly meal prep to full-service catering and in-home dining experiences. As a private chef, Helton focuses on more than just the plate. From presentation to pacing, each detail is carefully considered to shape how guests feel, whether through a multi-course plated dinner, a themed tasting menu, or a relaxed yet refined gathering.

For busy clients, her meal prep service brings elevated dining into the everyday. Menus are thoughtfully structured into three categories (Fit, Comfort, and Elevated) allowing clients to align their meals with their lifestyle, whether that means health-focused dishes, indulgent favorites, or restaurant-inspired cuisine at home.

A commitment to quality is at the heart of it all. Helton prioritizes fresh, organic ingredients whenever possible, often sourcing from local farms. “It’s not just about how the food tastes,” she notes, “it’s about intention from the ground up.”

Her experience includes time in notable kitchens like the James Beard House and competing at an elite level, placing 12th out of 250 in Dessert Wars, a milestone that continues to shape her approach to both flavor and presentation.

Helton describes her culinary style as comfort-driven, elevated through modern technique and global influence. Drawing inspiration from Southern roots and layered with Cajun, Caribbean, Italian, and Asian flavors, her menus strike a balance between familiarity and creativity.

At its core, Mel’s Table is about more than food. It’s about creating space for connection, one thoughtfully prepared meal at a time.
