A Sport For All

Uniting the fitness community one paddle at a time.

Within the last decade, a new sport has taken over the town. Pickleball, similar to tennis and ping-pong but with volleyball scoring, is quickly becoming a major pastime. Nationwide, people are finding that whether you live in a big city or a small suburb, there is a court to play on – and lucky for us, Fayetteville has many.

The most important aspect of this up-and-coming sport is its inclusivity—it’s welcoming to all ages and demographics. The rules are simple, and the game is easy to pick up, making it an accessible way to stay active. Played primarily as doubles, the goal is to hit the ball over the short net onto the opponent’s side of the court. While fast-paced, it’s easy to keep up with and provides a solid workout.

Older adults particularly appreciate pickleball for its low intensity and nonaggressive nature. Whether you’re playing as a casual hobby or as a competitive outlet, the sport’s popularity continues to grow.

Where to Play in Northwest Arkansas

Northwest Arkansas is home to several pickleball courts that hold tournaments and classes for both beginners and experts. If you’re new to the sport, Fayetteville Athletic Club (FAC) hosts how-to clinics with pickleball-specific coaches to help you get started. FAC also offers open play sessions on Saturday mornings for all skill levels. One standout feature of this location is its indoor court, insulated in a bubble for the winter season. Beyond pickleball, FAC provides opportunities to run in their gym, take workout classes, or swim laps in their pool.

The outdoor community also embraces pickleball, with courts available at parks across town. Some popular locations include Wilson Park, JJ’s Live, the University of Arkansas courts on MLK Boulevard, Walker Park, Farmington, and the Matrix in Lowell, AR. For those seeking membership-based options, Fayetteville Athletic Club memberships start at $99, while Matrix memberships start at $199.

For a more social pickleball experience, PB&JJ’s on North Steele Boulevard is a great option. With food trucks, areas for large groups to hang out, and plenty of space to cool off, it’s a hub for both recreation and connection.

From Hobby to Competition

Once you’ve learned to play, pickleball tournaments are gaining traction in Northwest Arkansas. Grab a partner and sign up for a competition at the Matrix, where fun and sport come together. Wilson Park also offers 10-week camps for $135, organized by skill level to provide helpful instruction.

Pickleball and Community

The Fayetteville Junior Civic League (JCL) has embraced pickleball as a way to bring people together and give back to the community. This good-hearted group is dedicated to improving the quality of life for families in need through grants and volunteering.

JCL’s initiatives include fundraisers like The Pickleball Classic, Trivia Night, and Big Party, which have collectively raised nearly $1 million to support Northwest Arkansas. Marta Hobbs, JCL president, and Jill Goodwin, the organization’s pickleball chair, also team up on the court as doubles partners. For Jill, “getting to compete either for fun or in tournaments locally” is one of her favorite parts of playing in Fayetteville.

The Gear Behind the Game

Pickleball’s rise has also led to a demand for merchandise and gear. Companies like Joola, Selkirk, Paddletek, and Vulcan offer custom paddles, bags, and rackets tailored specifically for the sport. With the smaller paddle size, players can choose designs and patterns that reflect their personal style, adding flair to their game.

New Year, New Hobby

As pickleball gains momentum, there’s a growing potential for it to rival tennis in popularity. So, grab a paddle, find a partner, and head to a local court to embark on your pickleball adventure. Whether you’re there for fun or competition, it’s a great way to stay active and connect with the community!
