Stress-Free Holiday Hosting

We ask the expert on how to prep your home for the holidays

The holidays are both stressful and exciting. Many of us find ourselves in the midst of a festive whirlwind, juggling family gatherings, gift shopping, and meal preparations. But hosting your loved ones doesn’t have to add stress to your already packed schedule.

We've enlisted the expertise of Kristin Campbell, the creative force behind Kristin Therese Designs, to share her advice on how to prepare your home for holiday guests while also enjoying the holidays too.

From Hospitality to Design [and Back]

Kristin's journey into the world of interior design was a second career, and it all began with a twist of fate. She had been working in the travel industry with a focus on event and meeting planning, when she was laid off in 2009. This was an opportunity. She had always loved decorating, and decided it was time to pursue this interest. After getting certified as a home stager and designer, she drove headfirst into entrepreneurship.

Kristin’s work primarily focuses on design, ranging from projects to consultations, color consults and e-design. She wants her clients to not just love their home, but feel comfortable and at ease. Currently, she’s working on a new certification as a vacation rental design specialist, because she believes everyone should stay in a space or home they love [even when away].

Planning Ahead for a Stress-Free Holiday

For Kristin, stress-free holiday hosting is all about the planning. There are many things you can do ahead of time to make the holiday season as enjoyable as possible.

1. Prepare the guest room [and bath]: If your guests will be spending the night, get their space ready in advance. Consider what they will need during their stay and how they might use the space. Replace bedding with fresh linens, provide extra blankets, leave a bottle of water, and ensure a lamp is nearby to let your guests easily move around the room. If you have a guest bath, ensure it is well-stocked with essentials and has a welcoming touch. Little details show your guests that you've put thought and intention into their stay.

2. Plan the meal [and ask for help]: If you're hosting a meal, consider making pies or prepping dishes in advance. Set the table to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Don't forget to ask your guests to bring a dish or drinks to make your job easier. They want to help!

3. Consider a kid-friendly space: If children will be attending, create a designated area with games, activities, and a special table for them. Make them feel welcome and entertained, while also ensuring the adults can relax and enjoy the holiday gathering too.

4. Decorating [and where to find the right decor]: When it comes to design, layers, texture, and contrast add interest. Consider layering a tablecloth, runner, and placemats. Mix dishes, like white plates with patterned salad plates. Pull out special pieces like china bowls for serving. Use linen napkins and quality glassware. Don’t forget the fresh flowers. If your holiday decor needs an update, Kristin loves stores like Home Goods, where you can mix and match to create a festive atmosphere.

5. When in doubt, hire it out: A one-time cleaning service can ensure your home is the sparkling clean slate you know it can be. Even decorating is made easier with help from a friend. Hiring a decorator is a great way to get a fresh take on your own decor and elevate your home for the holidays. Another area you can outsource is the food. Consider catering the entire meal or just a portion of it. The goal is to find a balance between enjoying your guests and the day without being tied to the kitchen.

Creating Moments & Memories

At the end of the day, what matters most during the holidays is enjoying the company of your guests and creating cherished memories. The holidays are, above all, about spending time with family and friends. Kristin encourages you to skip perfection and focus on what truly matters – the warmth, love, and joy that you and your guests bring to the holiday celebration.

Decorating and design doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little bit of planning and some necessary delegation, you can host family and friends while enjoying the holidays too. Remember to embrace the spirit of the season, create memorable moments, and make your guests feel welcomed in a space filled with love and thoughtfulness.
