Two years ago, Sue Johnson guzzled sodas every day, snacked on chocolate bars and managed her blood pressure with costly medications.
Then, she and her husband made a drastic change: they would eat nearly all organic food. The result? The couple lost more than 100 pounds, and Sue no longer takes her meds.
“We went organic, and we lost a lot of food cravings,” she says. “We just eat what our body wants us to eat.”
Now, Sue and her husband are sharing their love of fresh, healthy food with the Cypress community at their new business, Vitality Bowls. The franchise, located near Barker Cypress and Highway 290, opened last October and has quickly become a hot spot for those seeking a nutritious alternative to processed fast-food meals.
This month's specialty, the Liberty Bowl, offers a taste of seasonal red, white and blue produce. Blueberries, strawberries, coconut and flaxseed top off a thick acai-berry smoothie base you eat with a spoon.
Vitality Bowls customers can order one of 11 acai bowls or chose a freshly squeezed juice, smoothie or hot panini sandwich. The nutrition-packed bowls have a smoothie base layered beneath fresh veggies or fruit. A handful of toppings such as organic granola or pumpkin seeds are then sprinkled on top. No sugar is added. No frozen yogurt is used, and every bowl is made on demand.
“Nothing is made until you order it,” Sue says, adding that customers might have to be patient when placing an order.
But the food is worth the wait, says customer Judy Gomez, a Cypress resident who visits the shop at least three times a week after working out.
“I’m hungry, and I want something healthy,” she says. “This is the best option.”
