A Very Montage Moment

A Low Country Christmas at Montage Palmetto Bluff

Who knew my husband could still ride a bike no-handed?

Celebrating his 60th birthday, he was feeling the weight of all that such a milestone brings, but at Montage Palmetto Bluff, the gravity turned to gratitude.

Perhaps it was the bike riding, hopping on the cruiser that was delivered to our cottage, pedaling then gliding down the wide curving paths that link the property’s villages, inn, golf course and giant fire pits. Palmetto Bluff’s 20,000 acres of Low Country are ripe for the picking. Montage will pack one of their signature Veuve Clicquot bicycles with a bottle of the finest Veuve Clicquot bubbly and a picnic of your choice to explore. They have mapped out all the best trails and picture perfect settings to spread out your blanket and enjoy the view.

His hands came off the handlebars when he passed the glistening May River, a serene scene that makes even the most uptight birthday boy feel the glee.

Teeing up later at the May River Golf Course, looking out over the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, a stunning Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, we both felt the pull of the Low Country, a connection to the earth that everyone at Palmetto Bluff works so hard to preserve and present.

Montage’s team remains resource-efficient and eco-conscious through day-today operations – including water conservation through laundry practices and offering only paper straws and to-go boxes at all nine of the property’s dining outlets, in efforts to reduce plastic waste that makes its way back into our waters.

It’s this thoughtfulness, along with the warm welcome from everyone who greets you at Montage, that makes you feel special. Whether or not it’s your birthday.

Meals at Montage are events too. The food is always fresh, local and beautifully presented, and served with a smile. Buffalo’s was our favorite for breakfast, tucked away at the center of Wilson Village and offering lovely views of the May River and chapel. Sit on the sunny porch and linger longer. For dinner, be sure to wander (or bike) to the Canoe Club, for May River oysters with a blood orange mignonette, South Carolina grouper or a Wagyu strip, if you must go beef. The seafood cassoulet is a divine dish of lobster, shrimp, squid, seafood sausage, white beans, and kale. Sit on the covered porch and breathe in all that makes Montage so special.
