In the rushing world we live in, there are very few times we settle down enough to truly savor an experience, to be fully present in a moment that exists only briefly before slipping into a memory. For Alex Otteson and Belle McMillan, creating those fleeting yet meaningful moments has become their mission. Through thoughtfully crafted meals, the pair brings people together, inviting guests to slow down, connect, and savor not only the food, but also the music, conversation, and company surrounding the table.
That philosophy inspired the name of their concept, drawn from the Hebrew word Abel, meaning vapor, breath, or the fleeting nature of life. It serves as a reminder that life’s most meaningful moments are often the most temporary.
The two friends met through a mutual friend more than a year and a half ago. What began as a casual conversation quickly turned into hours of talking, much of it centered around food. Belle and Alex still laugh about spending nearly 30 minutes discussing rice alone. That conversation revealed a shared passion that laid the foundation for their partnership.
While they arrived at that passion from different paths, those differences have become one of their greatest strengths. Belle discovered cooking after moving out on her own, eventually combining her love of food with her background in art, design, and hospitality branding to shape Able’s visual identity. Alex’s journey began much earlier, learning to cook and embrace hospitality from her mom before gaining experience through travel and restaurant work, including Northwest Arkansas’ own Hail Fellow Well Met. Together, Belle’s artistic perspective and Alex’s creative hospitality complement one another, allowing the pair to build menus that are creatively inspired, visually compelling, and deeply intentional.
No two menus are the same. Each is thoughtfully designed to reflect the client’s vision, the venue, and the atmosphere they hope to create. For Alex and Belle, developing those menus is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
“Every menu we’ve created wouldn’t be the same unless we were both in it together,” Belle said.
That creative process is rooted in their friendship. Ideas often emerge while sharing meals, listening to music, or discussing art—finding inspiration in places far beyond the kitchen. From the first concept to the final plate, every decision is collaborative.
“It’s all ‘yes, and,’” Alex said. “By the end, you can’t untangle whose idea was whose.”
The event itself is the culmination of the entire process. After hours of planning, testing, and refining, they finally get to watch their vision come to life.
“Every plate, glass, tablecloth, and wine bottle are all props that we hope can drive you to an experience. Good hospitality is the culmination of all the little details,” Alex said.
As the evening unfolds, Alex and Belle are able to take a step back and observe. Conversations that begin with polite introductions soon become effortless. As guests settle into their seats, glasses are refilled, laughter grows louder, strangers become friends, and friends become even closer in one another’s company. The pair know this is why they do what they do. For moments like these.
For Alex, the experience feels almost orchestral. Every hour spent planning the menu, preparing ingredients, and arranging the space builds like the movements of a symphony, all leading to a few hours where everything comes together. The food, the music, the atmosphere, and the people become part of the same composition.
“We want people to walk into the room, feel like they belong, be seen, and be taken care of,” Belle said. “We care as much about how people feel as we do about what’s on the plate.”
While many people associate elevated dining with larger cities, Able believes those experiences belong in Northwest Arkansas. Drawing inspiration from cuisines around the world while sourcing ingredients from local farms whenever possible, the pair aims to make fine dining feel welcoming rather than intimidating.
“Food is universal,” Alex said. “I love how food, music, and conversation are able to transport you somewhere else for just one night. It’s sacred, and these moments are what stay with us forever.”
The pair rejects the idea that exceptional food has to be pretentious. Instead, they lead with curiosity and connection, encouraging guests to enjoy each course while learning about the traditions and cultures behind it.
For Alex and Belle, those meaningful experiences aren’t reserved for special occasions. They believe they can be created anywhere with intention, good company, and the willingness to try.
“Use what you have and what surrounds you. Just try it! It’s okay if you mess up; that’s part of the fun,” Alex said.
As Northwest Arkansas' culinary scene continues to grow, Able hopes to offer more than an upscale meal. By pairing thoughtfully sourced ingredients with personalized, immersive dining experiences, the pair strives to create evenings guests will remember long after the last course is served. They want to remind people that gathering around a table is still one of the simplest ways to connect.
“We want you to leave completely different than you came—to feel like you were suspended above reality.”
“Instead of moving to a bigger city to have those experiences, how can we bring the world here to Northwest Arkansas?”
