Congratulations to Academics Plus, McKinney’s first learning center, for celebrating its 30th year anniversary. Stephanie Talley shows tremendous pride as she states “We are locally owned (not a franchise), woman-founded and woman-owned, and we continue to be THE learning center of McKinney. It's an honor and a responsibility we take seriously as we increase each student's academic success.” And the lessons taught at the center have never been needed more due to the cost of COVID-19 on the education process.
As any parent knows, children learn at different levels and have varied abilities to learn in different situations. COVID-19 created an extremely unusual situation and Academics Plus enhanced the loss of the normal person-person connection as much as possible. For example, they dropped their normal teacher-to-student ratio from 1:3 to 1:2. But the most important aspect of their program, the ability to teach the student not just what to learn but how to learn, wasn’t lost.
Stephanie’s staff focuses on Enrichment and Remediation as well as Metacognition and Higher Order Thinking. They offer a unique ability to design each student’s individual program from their diagnostic results. Whether needing enrichment or remedial focus, the Academics Plus program works equally well. This has advanced many students from a remedial state to an enriched state as their grades improve at school. This K-12th grade program is truly diagnostic and prescriptive for each individual student and the students benefit significantly from that approach.
Academics Plus provides Individualized Instruction For:
- Reading
- Writing
- Math
- Algebra
- Study Skills
- SAT/ACT Preparation
- College Readiness
The staff continuously collaborates with school personnel, even being referred to new students at the recommendation of teachers. Progress testing documents the student’s growth and research based best practices form Academics Plus’ commitment to instructional goals.
Stephanie and her staff know that as school reopens there will still be some adjustments from the norm. When asked how the program plans to handle the new requirements forced by the pandemic, Stephanie simply said they would be following the requirements as set by the state and CDC at the time of opening. She already is prepared to have a daily, stringent cleaning protocol in place. Parents will be encouraged to contact the school regarding any requirements.
