Access Design + Build

Accessible, Adaptive and Universal Design

Access Design + Build is the Twin Cities’ authority on aging-in-place remodeling, and creates accommodating spaces for people with mobility and sensory challenges as well. Meticulous design and expert construction count for everything during these projects. A single poor choice can defeat their whole purpose.

From your perspective, this should be true of any remodel or addition you’re personally paying for. You may not necessarily need a curbless shower or wheelchair-accessible kitchen – but you would like a contractor that can conceptualize and execute such sophisticated projects all the same.

Fortunately, Access Design + Build does it all. Whoever you are, your comfort, convenience and peace of mind are all assured once you’ve witnessed the local contractor’s person-centered, solution-focused approach in action.

Accessible Remodeling

“We make remodeling easy by using a tool too many contractors do without,” said Jeannine Burnett, founder and principal designer of Access Design + Build. “Communication. That goes beyond answering my phone when you call. It means listening to you so we can fully understand your goals for your project. It means sharing the photos that help us bring your vision to life. It also means providing a schedule that details the project in full: who is coming, when they’re coming, how long they’re coming for, and why they’re staying for that amount of time.

“I like showrooms as much as the next designer, but I would much rather bring the showroom to you. Samples and storyboards are much more illuminating when they’re viewed in the spaces they’re meant for. Viewing them on-site also ensures we design a coherent living space: where all the materials complement one another just as well as they accommodate you.”

Quality by Design

“It doesn’t matter if we’re incorporating grab bars, low countertops and a walk-in tub into its layout,” Jeannine explained. “We can make any bathroom look like it was plucked straight from a five-star spa, regardless of who we’re creating it for. We also ensure every remodel has the right impact on the home’s resale value. Accessibility doesn’t have to come at the cost of aesthetics. Clunkiness and sterility are both easily avoided by making the right choices.

“A single project can improve your home in more ways than you imagined. A few years ago we updated a client’s century-old kitchen so it could have actual counter space. During the planning phase, we realized we could also give them a back hallway without doing any exterior work. We effectively expanded their living space without having to increase their home’s square footage. They were so delighted with the result that they recently welcomed us back to build another project for them.

“It’s the little extras that really make our services stand out. If I happen across the perfect shower curtain for your new bathroom, it just might materialize there to surprise you. If we notice something isn’t up to code, we bring it there. And whenever one of our tradespeople makes a mess, they make sure it’s gone before the workday has ended. In short, if there’s a finishing touch, the project’s not finished without it.”

Building Acceptance

“Several of our clients have disabilities, and have been marginalized their entire lives because of them,” said Jeannine. “I fully empathize, and ardently believe that everyone should feel accepted wherever they go.

“Sadly, many people feel flat out rejected by their own homes. Appliances, cabinets, countertops, and even the floor plan itself can fight against someone who has limited mobility. The same often holds true for non-disabled people, too. Whoever designed your home probably didn’t do it with you specifically in mind!

“Whether I’m incorporating it into the flow or removing it altogether, I find a solution to each of these obstacles. It’s all about shaping the client’s home to best fit their needs, and creating at least one place where they feel truly accepted.”
