Whether it’s a catastrophic hurricane or a powerful tropical depression, wind gusts, flying debris, and torrential downpours can cause considerable damage to your roof.

Due to their exposed location and large surface area, heavy winds are capable of peeling the shingles right off the roof’s surface. Once your shingles are gone, the wind starts to work on your underlayment, and soon your roof becomes defenseless against the pouring rain.

One of the best ways to prepare for potential storms is to have your roofing system inspected by a professional. A pre-storm inspection is used to identify any areas on your roof that are already missing shingles or otherwise damaged.

Another way to ensure your roofing system's longevity during storm season is to ensure that your routine maintenance has been completed within the last month. Water is unable to drain properly if the gutters and drains are clogged.

In a hurricane, your roof needs all the drainage it can get. Be sure to clean out all gutters, drains, downspouts, and anywhere else on or around your home where water drains. Installing covers over your gutters can also help keep them clear with less upkeep.

Keeping trees trimmed back is essential during storm season. Trees hanging over your home are dangerous, especially during storms with high winds, like hurricanes. Always keep limbs and branches trimmed back away from your roof.

Watch out for frauds! Unknown contractors tend to appear in the wake of traumatic storms, so be sure you are only talking to and paying your trusted advisors.
