Every morning at 7:00 a.m. in Pottsboro, Dr. Eric Newberry and his wife, Jennifer, sit down over coffee to discuss the day ahead and share updates on their latest projects. This ritual, which has continued for over 30 years, allows them to collaborate while setting healthy boundaries between work and personal life. For this husband-and-wife team, starting the day together in this way defines the balance between their professional responsibilities and their life outside the office.
In 2024, after selling their previous practice in McKinney, the Newberrys purchased Nietling Optical from Dr. Dennis Nietling in Denison. A Main Street fixture for more than 40 years, the practice had long-standing patients, some families returning for generations. The Newberrys saw an exciting opportunity: to honor the community’s trust in a beloved local business while introducing modern tools, techniques, and treatments.
After completing the purchase in March 2024, the Newberrys immediately launched a year-long renovation. Every detail of the office, from paint and flooring to furniture and fixtures, was refreshed to create a welcoming, modern environment. “Patients have appreciated the modern look and feel of the office and the changes we have made,” Jennifer says. With these updates, EyeCare Texoma combines the warmth of a small-town practice with cutting-edge technology, giving patients confidence in their care.
Just as they were preparing for their grand reopening, Denison began Phase 2 of its downtown construction along the 400 blocks of Main Street. Despite the ongoing work, EyeCare Texoma has remained open. Jennifer encourages patients needing extra assistance to call ahead, as navigating construction and parking can be challenging. The project is expected to conclude by July 2026.
Dr. Newberry’s mission is to educate patients about their eyes and the possibilities offered by new technology, medications, and therapies. EyeCare Texoma provides comprehensive eye exams for patients of all ages, starting at age five. These exams go beyond checking vision. They assess overall eye health, offering a complete picture of a patient’s ocular condition.
Residency-trained in the diagnosis and management of medical eye conditions, Dr. Newberry treats everything from glaucoma and macular degeneration to diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, dry eye, allergic eyes, and red eyes. With advanced equipment and expertise, the practice can manage virtually any eye disease.
“The eyes are a window to the soul,” the saying goes, but in Dr. Newberry’s practice, they are also a window to overall health. Because the eye is the only place in the body where the vascular system can be observed without an incision, routine exams, enhanced by pupil dilation and Optomap retinal imaging, allow Dr. Newberry to assess a patient’s general health alongside their eye health.
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is one of the most common conditions seen at EyeCare Texoma. Whether caused by insufficient tear production or rapid tear evaporation, the team can diagnose the specific type and recommend treatments to relieve symptoms.
Glaucoma is another area of Dr. Newberry’s specialty, and he brings over 25 years of experience to the care of these patients. Every patient is screened for glaucoma, with Dr. Newberry reviewing test results personally and explaining treatment options in an easy-to-understand way.
EyeCare Texoma also offers urgent care for sudden or concerning eye symptoms. Red, itchy, or uncomfortable eyes; foreign bodies or possible corneal abrasions; flashes and floaters - these can all signal conditions needing prompt attention. A dilated exam allows Dr. Newberry to accurately diagnose and manage urgent cases, including signs of retinal detachment or even systemic health issues like high blood pressure or stroke.
For the Newberrys, North Texas isn’t just a practice location, it’s home. Pottsboro, where they live, and Denison, where they serve patients, are integral parts of their lives. Their commitment to the community drives them to provide exceptional eye care for generations, ensuring that neighbors, young and old, have access to the latest in vision care and treatment.
At EyeCare Texoma, advanced technology meets small-town heart, giving every patient clarity, confidence, and care for the eyes that connect them to the world.
