“It’s how God works,” Myron Wilson explains, “I was a minister in a local church in McKinney and thought I would be in church work all of my life, but God had other plans.” The gentle, soft-spoken man explains how God made his direction become Direction61:3.
Myron’s passion is palpable as he explains, “Driving down the highway one day I thought, with all of the resources that we have in this area, it doesn’t make sense that we have homeless teenagers”. He was speaking directly to the fact that a large portion of homeless teens in Texas are those that have "aged out" or grown beyond the foster care system. He continues with, “It’s more than just a passion, it’s our purpose”.
“I knew I had to do something”, he said and that was when Direction61:3 was born and named after the verse, ISAIH 61:3, which says: “…provide for those who grieve to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…”
Direction61:3 assists teens in a comprehensive program as they age out of the foster care system. Their program includes a uniquely designed curriculum led by local professional volunteers and leaders. Key and CRITICAL in their program are the life-skills taught, including budgeting, personal finances, basic banking, and grocery shopping to how to apply for jobs and to college, Direction61:3 creates a “village of support” promoting love and acceptance without judgment and a sense of belonging. Stability, permanence, support, and love are all key components. All with the fundamental love of Jesus Christ and for the young women to embrace and live a life of faith.
“Make no mistake, the change and impact our program makes in the lives of these incredible kids are profound,” Myron concludes. Chrissy aged out of foster care and became part of the Direction61:3 family. She knows firsthand its impact, “I feel like there is a purpose in my life and that I am loved. I would probably not be alive today if it weren’t for Direction61:3”
This wonderful program keeps growing and helping teens who are aging out of the foster system. However, they are always in need of volunteers such as tutors and mentors. Supplies and donations are always helpful as well as monetary donations.
Established in 2017, this ministry has full non-profit status, and is registered with the state of Texas as a 501c3 organization. Contact Direction61:3 today and see how you can help! Visit www.Direction613.org, call (214) 544-9055, or drop by 6190 Virginia Pkwy to see what great work is being done!
