For local Denver firm Factor Design Build, home renovation projects are a unique opportunity to truly find the soul of a space—meshing a home’s innate character with the tastes, goals and lifestyles of its owners.

This level of detail and expertise is especially evident in one recent home renovation project in Denver’s Hale neighborhood taken on by the Factor Design Build team. Seeking to address the last rooms of their 1936 home and bring them up to the same design standards as the rest of the residence—while also gaining more play and living space for their son—the family was also focused on ensuring that the whole home remained cohesive in look and feel.
“It was important to all of us that the work we do really tie into the existing feel and materiality of the home, both inside and out,” Fiester says. “And I think we were really able to achieve that.”
Working from original design plans produced by Denver’s Chalet Colorado, Factor Design Build put its unique structural touch on the project while also executing the construction and overall interior design. The project included the renovation of the home’s existing master suite, kids bedroom and basement, as well as creating a 178- square-foot addition that includes a family room, mud room and kids toy storage closet.
For the interior design of the home, the Factor Design Build team put a modern twist on the homeowners’ craftsman style. The home is filled with a series of contrasts that work together to refresh and bring interest to each space. The light walls are contrasted against dark wood floors throughout. The curved openings give a spacious, airy feel, while the modern shaker style doors lend a sophisticated simplicity. White sliding barn doors are set with the dark, black hardware that’s used throughout the home. Perhaps the most noticeable theme throughout is the motif of multiple shades of blue—in the furniture, tile, vases and other details—that provides the spaces with striking pops of color.
These themes all play together to create a truly cohesive feel throughout the home, from the matching rooflines of the existing exterior and new addition to the shades of blue tying the interior together, while still including plenty of unique details to enhance the home’s character.
One example is at the base of the stairs. An exposed brick column contrasts with the white shiplap of the stairway walls and features a unique rug runner on the stairs. Some of Fiester’s favorite details? The marble tile set in a subway pattern around the downstairs fireplace for its sophisticated look and feel. And, of course, the kids toy storage closet for the chaos it so expertly organizes.
