The History and the Heart of Watson & Knox

Faithfully serving the CSRA since opening its doors in 1929, Watson and Knox Insurance offers tailored insurance options and risk management solutions for individuals and businesses.

Originally founded by John W. (Bubba) Watson, and soon after joined by Robert E. Knox, Sr., this Thomson-based business is currently led by Andrew H. Knox, Sr., fondly known to all as Andy Sr., who has been President of the agency since 1978. His son, Andrew H. Knox, Jr., also known as Andy Jr., joined the business in 2005, making Watson and Knox a third-generation, family-run business.  

Providing specialized protection of assets and being trusted advisors, while keeping the business locally owned and operated, is top priority at Watson and Knox. “We’re a family-owned, third-generation insurance agency,” says Andy Jr., “and we’re committed to continuing to be owned locally, make decisions locally, and to have a say in how we operate.”

As an independently owned insurance agency, Watson and Knox offers a wide variety of services, through more than twenty different providers, which can be tailored to specific situations.

“Because we’re an independent agency, we represent a number of different companies,” says Andy Sr. “The advantage is that all the companies have different kinds of accounts that they work with, and we’re able to find a home for just about any particular situation.”

The philosophy at Watson and Knox encompasses taking a holistic approach to risk management, which goes beyond simply providing insurance options.

“The way we operate is unique in the fact that we are an insurance agency, but our whole strategy is to implement the risk management process in whatever we do – whether it’s commercial lines, employee benefits, or personal lines,” explains Andy Jr.

“There’s more to it than just giving you a price and moving on,” continues Andy Jr.  “We’re going to look at it from a holistic standpoint and make sure that you’re covered like you should be and getting risk management services if needed.”

“We do a risk analysis whether it be in personal lines or commercial lines,” adds Andy Sr. “We take the time to determine what a person’s potential exposure is for economic loss. Then we take that down to the point of determining whether they want to assume a particular risk themselves or pay a premium and transfer that risk to an insurance company.”

With such a diverse spectrum of policies and services offered, the agency intentionally assigns knowledgeable personnel in each specialized area.

“We’re basically departmentalized in that we have a group of people in the office who do personal lines, which includes homeowners, auto, boats, umbrella policies, etc...,” says Andy Sr. “We have another group who focuses on commercial lines, which includes businesses, property, and casualty insurance. We also have another section that is dedicated to employee benefits, mainly group health.”

The staff at Watson and Knox strives to provide personal, face-to-face service in a world that grows more and more remote each day. They also keep a special connection to the community by being involved in local schools, the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, and special events such as the Relay for Life event each spring.

This agency has a 90-year tradition of keeping clients happy and believes that the greatest testament their customers can provide is sending family and friends their way.
